last night i caught a story on fox news that really got to me:
yale has admitted rahmatullah hashemi to its undergrad progam! rahmatullah hashemi was the taleban spokesman prior to and during the u.s. invasion of afghanistan. somewhere sean hannity, from fox news, got the brilliant idea of targeting yale amd rahmatullah hashemi for this issue.
sean hannity has accused both rahmatullah hashemi and yale of being terrorist sympathizers. i am not going to argue that the taleban was a nice and happy government that took adaquate care of its people or anything remotely similar to that. the taleban defintely turned a blind eye to terrorists living in its country. however this is not unlike what many other countries have done and still do. the fact of the matter is that every member of the taleban isn't automatically evil or bad, if so we would have to lock up most of the country. this would have been a terrible philosophy to have after world war II. rahmatullah hashemi was not a decision making official, he was merely the governement spokesman, much like ari fleischer or scott mclelland.
sean hannity in his verbal attacks glared into the camera and banged on his desk in much the manner that joe mccarthy would do. he attacked yale's right to admit diverse thinkers into its folds. he attacked yale's liberal education policy's, which is very ironic since members of the taleban are very conservitive. i really do not understand how letting rahmatullah hashemi into to your school is supporting terrorism. rahmatullah hashemi was merely a spokesman for a government. he was cleared by the united states government to recieve a visa. the karzhi government asked rahmatullah hashemi to be part of its government, a government clearly supported by the united states.
this is just merely an attempt to discredit a traditionally liberal institution through mass media hype. there is nothing honorable in what mr. hannity is doing through his attacks.
the united states is supposed to be a place of free thought and free ideals. there is no evidence that this man is a terrorist or in any way connected to anything devious or underhanded! yale should have a right to admit anyone that is not a proven security risk. in fact this is one of the best ways to combat global terror and hatred. if more individuals from other countries have the opportunity to study here they will be able to return with accurate and positive images of america!
bah.
