Question for the musicians.

I'm heavily considering learning how to play the drums. Lessons, while pricey, don't seem unreasonable. I also think it might help further help matters if I ended up buying a drum kit (I've seen a few new ones being sold for $300, though I don't know if that's good or not ( Read more... )

I taught myself, and there were definitely some drawbacks. My form and posture is probably holding me back because I didn't learn it right from the start. Drum quality is unimportant until you're trying to play shows or record. I bought my set piece by piece, and learned each new piece as I obtained it (started with just a snare, then cymbal, hihat, bass, toms. If I could do it over I'd start with a full set and learn it all together.

It's the most fun of all the instruments I play. There's no feeling quite like the energy you feel while playing drums. Good luck! I hope you'll post some sound files when you get started!

That's good to know. As much as it kinda pains me to admit it, I've been playing the drums on Rock Band 2 and found I like it a lot. I'm very much aware they're not real drums, but I'm starting to get the hang of the game and realize that those "drums", while sorta similar, are not the real thing. I also worry that I'm not holding the sticks right, not hitting the right place, and so forth.

I might opt for the lessons sooner rather than later. How much did you pay for your set after you collected the pieces, if I may ask?

I still haven't bought a whole set. The pieces probably avgd about 100 each. Over the course of 2-3 years, I probably spent around 5-600. It's hard to remember. The most "personal" part is probably the bass drum pedal. It has to feel right.

I love RB2. As different as it is, it still helps you get the right-hand right-foot downbeat, left-hand upbeat coordination. In fact, i find it's really good for my stamina.

I tell you what are great if you can find them, are Squire drum kits. They stopped making them last year, but some stores may still have them stocked. They're cheap and worth the money. Throw away the cymbals though and get some Zildjians though, because the cymbals that come with it are like trashcan lids, but the drums and hardware that come with it are solid. Just an idea.

No useful information, but I just have to say-- I felt the same way after playing the RB2 drums. They're just FUN.
