So, yes. It's been a while since I've written. And, coincidentally, that's exactly what I've been wanting to talk about! (the subordinate predicate (i.e. writing) not temporal qualifier

You make a good point. Or several... =) I confess that I have an enormous habit of equating spelling and grammar skills with a person's intelligence, and I constantly come across emails or posts that just cause me actual mental anguish and to *usually* have an instant lack of respect for the writer. Especially with the enormous degeneration of the written language that's been spawning from our fast-paced e-world ("how r u? i THIMK ur sIgHT rokKs!!! im' definately LOL uh lot. u should of seen")
Then sometimes there'll be people who I love and respect, and I have to bear that in mind when I finally see how they write. Contrarily there'll also be people I might not care for so much in person, but I like who they are when they write so that puts them higher up in my book and I have to bear *that* in mind when I'm around *them*!
All in all, I guess I should definitely try to lay off the grammar/spelling nazi stuff a bit...

I actually have no problem with IM/1337 and do find it to be interesting as it represents some of the changes in our culture and way of life (the FUTURE!!!), and the people who created it seem to generally have had better linguistic skills than most of the people who've ended up using it. What I hate is, for instance, getting emails full of it. I think email is one of a few types of e-communication that should still merit thoughtful writing

Hey, look who I found! It's Amanda. I never was able to look at your Burning Man photos. You directed me to the gallery at theory.org and all that's there are fractals.
Hey! Welcome and well done. I'll email you the url since I'm actually at a computer. But yeah, there's a seperate server there that has the photos, rather than the math-freak art projects ;).
I just had a conversation with somebody about this a couple of weeks ago. They were thinking that "linguist == grammar snob," and I had to disabuse them of this notion.
