Depends on what you want. Do you just need a point and click? Do you want manual controls (exposure, aperture etc.)? Will you be printing these out and making nice large prints, or is it just for display on your computer, and the occasional print-out. If you just want something simple, get like any cheap 200$ camera, the resolution nowadays is more than enough on any of the cheap cameras. I personally have a canon, and like it, but I can't really say anything about any of the other brands.
I want something that has potential. Eventually I'd like to learn how to take good pictures, but I figure I need something easy to work with to start out. And most of the time I just need something small enough to carry around and take pictures when the mood strikes.
I think you should be fine with any lower model that has some manual controls thrown in, so you can start experimenting.
I'm currently thinking of moving up and getting one of those 1k SLR's (well, I probably won't get it, but I feel that I need it) but I have been relatively happy with my 3X zoom 4MP camera for the past few years.
You can get a really good Nikon Coolpix with good resolution and zoom functions for pretty cheap these days. Not sure how small they go, though. I really like mine, although it doesn't take good pictures for concerts and stuff if you're not really close to the band (flash does dickall)... it's a Minolta DiMage E323, if you upgrade from that one you could probably get a really decent camera for (by this time) the same amount of money as I paid for this one.
