I don't think Espo and Lanie are technically considered co-workers? (Although Castle and Beckett aren't either.) I seem to remember them trying to keep it a secret for like...a day. And I'm not sure if anyone knew outside of Ryan/Castle/Beckett. It is kind of dumb, but I'm sure they're just trying to create drama for the relationship now that they're together. But anyway, Lanie works for the medical examiner and Espo for the PD so...that may be some technicality that they're clinging to. *shrugs*
True, I just find it really odd that they're fretting about everyone finding out and....okay, maybe they have something to worry about under the new chief, but the way it was written made it sound like Castle and Beckett are legitimately afraid of their coworkers, who've only been waiting for this for years, just like the audience has. And they're fretting about it on the basis that, what? Castle won't be able to work with the PD anymore? You're right - he doesn't technically work for the PD anyway.
Now, if it were played like Castle and Beckett had held off on moving onto this stage for so long that it was...strange for them to admit to everyone that it'd finally happened, that'd be cool to me. Same kind of end result, but without the slightly nonsensical explanation. :/
