So week 2 has come to a close on the excavation and there have been several pretty neat finds. One of our biggest so far has been a carved marble capital to a column, however the only problem is that it is sticking out of one of the walls of the trench. This means that it gets to stay there and we don't get to pull it out or see the rest of it

Clue me in, where are you? Also totally jealous that you're excavating anything remotely related to a caldarium. Better yet, get me the info and talk me up to whoever's in charge, so I can go next year! And Rome, no matter how hot, is fantabulous in the summer!

I'm at a site called Carsulae in Umbria, about an hour North of Rome. It's a dig through Valdosta University in Georgia headed by a woman named Jane Whitehead. There are some things here that are much much better than Murlo (ie housing, food, internet access, the town and a general vicinity to Rome), but there are some really shitty things too (ie Jane Whitehead). We all hate the woman with a passion and can't wait to get away from her. The site is nice and we have been pulling some rather awesome stuff out of the ground like a carved marble capital, coins, bits of metal, glass, bits of carved ivory, floor mosaics and the newest thing, a large stone slab which seems to have to winged females carved on it. So if you can stand a bitch for a number of weeks, then you might be interested.
