wow! i didn't realize that sludge was so widely used, or that the vile, worse-than-useless EPA is so insouciant about it!
it's disheartening how hard we have to work just to find healthy food any more. when i look at how badly the previous owners trashed this place (discarded car batteries in the woods etc) i have no illusions that any of the soil where i'm growing stuff wasn't at some point splatted with toxins, and even the manure i use from my own horses as compost is the product of commercially-raised and therefore heavily-sprayed hay and grain.
nothing as overt as my friend in bermuda who 'enhanced' the walkways in her garden with asbestos ripped out of her house, that she didn't want to pay dispose of properly.
but bad enough.

I truly love that icon!

Yeah, we're screwed. Doomed.

Well, we all do what we can. No matter what, it's better than the industrial swill, don't you think? On all kinds of levels.

How did she enhance with asbestos? I'm trying to figure out how that might look...

yeah, you just have to focus on doing the best you can and not letting yourself nut up over all you can't control. most of the time i can, but sometimes it funks me up.
david was telling me about a special he watched about fish, and what we've done to salmon. apparently they tested jacques cousteau's son, a woman who was a totally-organic vegan, her 4 year old son, and some other chick. cousteau and the other chick just eat whatever. the heavy metals count was WAY higher in the vegans, and it turns out it had nothing to do with food, but the flame-retardant chemicals CA uses for everything from pjs to couches and carpets. apparently the woman was devastated.
i'm not sure how bev did the asbestos in her garden. we were walking around her lovely walkways and she was telling us about ripping out the asbestos in her house and how she didn't plan on paying the disposal fees so used it to create the paths. i was too busy formulating plans to get the hell out*G*.

Eeek!

That's interesting (but sad) about the California chemicals. Everything that's new smells weird. Probably not just in California!

I linked to that story in my own journal...uh, thanks for the link? Ewwww.

Then of course, sodium benzoate in colas and sodas etc. seems to mutate or warp or do something nasty to the mitrochrondrial* DNA, the part that's passed down by the mom...

We are all pretty much fubared.

*maybe messed up the spelling, too! I'll blame the additives.

It's everywhere. We'd go nuts trying to eliminate it all, we seriously would. So we each do what we can...
