So, word has it that Barack Obama has been invited to the University of Notre Dame to speak at this year's commencement ceremony; he will also be "the ninth U.S. president to be awarded an honorary degree by the University and the sixth to be the Commencement speaker ( Read more... )

I don't think I'm as big a fan of the Catholic Church as you are, but I respect your background, and I too am sorry to see Notre Dame going this direction. I hope his words during the ceremony give someone cause to reconsider...

I don't know that it is really about being a fan of the Catholic church. The real problem, as I see it, is that Notre Dame was founded as a Catholic institution, and the Catholic Church has a fairly firm set of core beliefs. One of these is the sanctity of life. An institution that does not support contraception certainly cannot support abortion. President Obama is strongly in favor of a woman's right to choose, which comes directly in conflict with the beliefs of the Catholic Church. Ignoring any other reasons a Catholic institution should have misgivings about inviting this man to speak for such an occasion (let alone honoring him with a degree), his recent lifting of bans on providing funding to international organizations that provide abortion services should be enough to give pause. Yes, Barak Obama is our president, but that fact alone should not be reason enough for an institution to shower him with honors, certainly not so when those honors would come as something of an endorsement of the man's beliefs -- and those ( ... )
