I hate charcoal too. Not in the least because I learned to write/hold a pencil from my parents and thus hold it like a left hander despite being right handed. This leads to my ending up with the side of my hand black anytime I draw even with pencil. With charcoal not only does my hand end up black but the drawing gets ridiculously smeared too. Only thing I use it for is laying out paintings if I can help it.
