Why bother thinking about this now? For one thing, being in academia is the rule, novelists are the exception. For another, your answer now has no bearing on your answer four years from now.
You're totally right about the second point you really make. As for the whole 'novelists are the exception,' it just seems to me that I get writing done so easily (it's not necessarily easy--I'm just good at giving myself deadlines and getting them done) that sometime along the line I'd have the chance to teach and I'd totally consider it...just because...I feel like I really enjoy taking a look at people's work. But totally, my own writing will come first of course.
Also I think that teaching--not necessarily at the college level, but certainly at some higher levels--would probably help make my writing better. That's what I hear, apparently.
I think you should carry on with being-in-general and not think too much about being-in-particular. Do some winging. See what happens.
That said, I think you'd be a good teacher. I also think you'd be a good writer, given that I think you're a good writer already. I'd be interested in hearing more about why you're thinking about teaching, what you see as the pros and cons, etc.
Let's talk about writing someday. I think I'm turning into a poet.
Winging is totally badass. As for teaching, I think I'd really enjoy it--perhaps not on a total longterm, but, when it comes to writing it seems to me much more exciting than other teaching I've thought I'd like to do. Professorship just seems like a good idea considering I really want to get an MFA after I graduate, but I'm also interested in teaching writing at any intelligent level (high school onwards). I guess I feel like it would be a lot of fun to help people. I guess I want to help around with communal dorkiness, but that a professorshipness (or something along those lines) would totally help make it very academic-based, which can be exciting, perhaps. This isn't really a pros-cons list...though....
When you get back, there are a lot of mentoring programs starting up between OC and OHS. Who knows if you'll ultimately get an MA, MFA, etc., but it's never too early to figure out if you enjoy teaching others...even if they aren't model pupils.
Right, that's a totally ridiculously awesome point. I think it would help me figure that out lots. I'm also going to be meeting with a Teach For America lady in December...
