This is something that I was thinking after the thing on weirdjews tonight. Which unfortunately, yet again, made all the warm fuzzies about jews and community go away. I hope they come back soon.

Anyway, I know generally in religious communities (from what I've heard -- correct me if I'm wrong please!) The letter of the law comes first rather than the idea ( Read more... )

Makes perfect sense and sounds like you're on a really good path. "Do first and then understand" is probably very rarely accomplished, or when it is, the do-ing lacks proper meaning.

There's a question in the Talmud - Is it better to learn, or to act? The answer given is that it is better to learn, because learning leads to action.

In truth it's all about action, but generally we can't just mindlessly do things. The fact that you feel happy and good about yourself after doing something that just happens to be a mitzvah says a lot.

Thank you... I just felt a huge guilt was trying to be placed on me should I have not sold the chametz (which I'm going to do now but now it feels in someway not my wanting to do it but people telling me I have to do it, or at least, "just do it, it's not that hard, why are you making a big deal out of this?!?!?"... because to me it IS a big deal to be aware of what I'm doing and knowingly do it).

Actually, this is frustrating and upsetting me because now I am being attacked for now having to do something that I was told to do and not something I wanted to do for myself.

Guess you can't win 'em all... Have a good Shabbos.

I say this as someone who really likes you.

Your reaction to the comments on the post really startled me. Your post was an information gathering post (as ono-sendai pointed out here: http://community.livejournal.com/weirdjews/1422011.html?thread=22741691#t22741691... )

You have read my responses wrong, which is understandable as I was severely lacking in sleep.

It was not that I didn't like the answer.

I just felt that people were basically giving me an answer and then saying 'GO DO THIS NOW'... there was a bit of militant-isms in the thread. "What's the big deal? Just go do this!" and as I said, I do not like feeling in anyway forced to practice a certain way.

Whether or not I sell my chametz is up to me. The only question that should have been answering was the one that dream_king answered VERY succinctly. "Sell your chametz and then it's ok"... not "well, no, and just go to this website, fill some information and let's get everyone's panties in a twist over it ( ... )

One of my problems with the cafeteria-style Judaism (which I admittedly follow...... so this is more in theory than in practice) is that not everything feels good, but that doesn't mean it isn't important. You know ( ... )

In the immortal words, of my stepmother-in-law, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke. If some person who you are never going to meet in real time is going to crawl up your arse and play more Jewish than thou, why let them have that sort of power? Tell 'em to fuck off and proceed with Passover laws as you see fit.
