I couldn't take my eyes off the news yesterday. From the moment I got home until I had to go to work. I was thankful for the diversion ( Read more... )

Donate to me instead, Bill. I'll buy a tank and flatten Washington, buy some beers and we can all party down with cheese and crackers.

Why do we want to go to New Orleans? I'm sure they've called off Mardi Gras, and I'm not flashing boob for no bead.

Besides, those rouge gangs would surely sticky-bomb us, those dirty jerks.

No, let's get straight to the root of evil and roust those fuckers out.

(True Story: I say 'fuck' even more at 3 a.m.)

First: I'm GLAD you posted the Death March of The Penguins. I needed to laugh. A lot of people do.

Two: Fuckin' A right.

The anger you and others feel sadly will probably be used for political mileage, when there should be an awesome cry from the people...how can the land of liberty, the country that gave us the Declaration of Independance, Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, be home to such barbarism. Why has a huge section of America been allowed to slip into a void of morality, ethics and sense of community. Many people are out there helping their neighours, strangers and even poor stranded Aussies living under a bridge. How could savages be living in a country that was carved by the cry to freedom? The storm has unleashed destruction, but also hatred. I hope and it's a hope against all sense, that out of this will come a realisation that poverty and ignorance is the greatest terror in your magnificent country. Only America can defeat America ( ... )

i am not saying that some policemen, maybe a lot of them, are doing their job because they care about people and want to protect them. but new orleans has been notorious in its corrupt police force, some of their ranks going so far as to assassinate witnesses to their misdeeds.
i was writing more from the mindset of those who were perpetrating the violence, who cannot see the police as anything other than a hostile force that is there only to bother and contain them. and many of them could have a very accurate view of them as such given direct experience to that effect.

i think any city, be it new orleans or new haven, rich or poor, any city could easily sink into the same situation given the same conditions. any person you see walking down the street would kill to protect his life and the lives of his family. everyone has a breaking point, and could perform the basest acts given the right circumstances.

Given the right situation, but disaster strikes and people in other places rise to the fore, or the decline happens over a greater period of time. This happened so quickly and so violently, people in a first world nation shouldn't be so angry...but what will be done to ensure that it doesn't happen again?

Don't beat yourself up about bringing humour into the world even in the darkest of days. Aussies have inherited that wonderful British tradition of finding the greatest humour in the worst of things...which is why Derek and Clydes song My old man's got cancer of the knob did so well here;D
Humour is light and the darkest night cannot stand against even the smallest light...so bring forth your humour and light the world, because it's getting very dark.
