Grats on the new ride, and a good choice you've made. Had I the means for a new car, the Fit would be on my short list.
Double grats on sticking it to the obnoxious salespeople. They thought they saw you coming a mile away, but you saw *them* seeing you coming a mile away. Or something. :D
I'm surprised you even bothered to do business with a dealership that tried those low-hand tactics. I don't think I could've dealt with that myself. If they attempted it, I'd tell them to get stuffed, then take their low-ball offer and see if other dealers will match it.
When I plan to finally buy, I'm going to tell dealer certain rules up front. None of this price dancing and up selling, else I'll walk right out the door and not come back.
While I think I'm going to get the RAV4 or Forester, I've not 100% ruled out the Fit. I go "out there" too often to make the Fit a wise choice for me long term. Though I will consider if MPG becomes a larger issue.
The only reason I did was that I had Tek with me, who's bought 10 cars in his life, and helped with 5 new car purchases. He's a master at it -- for example, we DID have a dealer local to him in Delaware that had matched the low-ball offer, and we WERE very close to walking out.
But this dealer's scummyness even surprised him. He said this particular purchase was the biggest challenge he'd ever had.
Have you considered a CR-V? My best friend gileskat is, as a field-worthy SUV that still has the better features of a Honda.
It angers me when dealers try this tactic. The trick is always pretend like you don't need the car, and you've been looking elsewhere, and make your own numbers. That is, if the seller isn't cordial and nice. Great looking vehicle, but sorry it was tinged with snot.
Eh, Tek's and my maintenance check turned out perfect, and save for picking up the plates, I will never need to deal with that dealer again. No snot, just a nice car. :>

And I don't really know if I've the means either. This is taking a huge chance, but with Pug on its last legs, it's a chance I had to take.
