Looks like you've got the right idea as far as where to put the lock. The other option is under the seat, but that would depend on how high up the seat is and how long the lock is.

Seat bag, backpack, rack/trunk bag, etc.

Personally, I don't carry a lock, nor do most people I know. We just bring our bikes into places, prop them up in front of windows, etc.

You should also worry about the lock hitting the frame, your legs, etc.

Yup, gonna go the backpack route. Thanks, there's so much to consider that it slipped my mind. Going for another ride tonight, I'll pick up a backpack while I'm out. The gym doesn't allow bikes inside, but they have those hoop things for locks. The lock was slightly in the way, but with the cable I managed to keep it clear.
