Is the Fullmetal Alchemist series on Hulu a continuation of previous the series? And if so, is it relatively standalone? Because if so, I had enough I wanted to do this summer, dangit....

Pretty sure it's a remake that more closely follows the manga.

(Which, incidentally, means it may be better.)

Yeah, I came across it a week ago. I agree with the first comment that it probably is trying to follow the manga more closely. Personally, I'm a bit disappointed. I really thought the first series was best when it didn't try to replicate the manga, because the two mediums really are different. Plus, I've been over the manga's storyline so many times that it's reeeeaallly old by now. What I was hoping for was a series that departed like the second half of the first series, but did so sooner. Or hey, even something that picked up where the movie left off.

So... if I've never read or seen any Fullmetal Alchemist before, this would probably be a decent and cost-effective way to get into the series?

Yes it would. So far, only the first episode had stuff that wasn't in the manga, the rest seems to be much closer. One thing that was interesting is that they explained the backstory or the Elric brothers before the Liore episode (which was where we first meet the Elrics in the manga)
