Camp Games

Jun 02, 2009 23:02

I'm going to be a counselor at a day camp fairly soon, and I'm looking for camp games. The youngest campers will be around second grade, and the oldest will be in junior high. Ideally, I'm looking for things the older kids will enjoy but the younger kids could jump in on with little consequence. Things that mostly the younger kids will like are ( Read more... )

When are you leaving for camp? I "inherited" a book from my mother called The Great Game Book (it's from the 70s!). It has many, many, many camp suitable games (as well as odd 70s fare). I'd be more than happy to mail it to you, if you'd like to borrow it. I could also type out a quick game list and then just type out rule descriptions of the ones that interest you.

It's a day camp run by the board of recreation of the town 20 minutes away from mine, so I'm just driving over from my house. It starts a week or two into July, as I recall.

That would be great! I'd be perfectly happy with whichever method is easier for you.

So no kitsch games?

Oh, some of these games are very kitsch. There's one where you try to find the other players with you eyes closed by "sensing their auras." (One of the ones that I don't recommend for camp, by the way).

I found the game book. The games are divided by how many people can play, so I was wondering about how many kids you were expecting.

The average is 15/week, but it can be above 20 or around 10 some weeks. They can also split up into groups, though full-group games are better.

Thanks for looking into this! I think I've exhausted the two websites I've been stealing games from the past two years.

That is-I've looked for more, but all websites with some semblance of web design or search capability have the same games and the same wordings to describe them which probably derive from Wikipedia or something.

Sorry it took so long. I tend to be scatterbrained. ^^;

Here are some possible games for about a dozen:
Flying Dutchman*
Catch the Dragon's Tail
Human Pinball
Go Tag
Fox and Squirrel*
Smaug's Jewels*
Stand Up
Knots
Rattlers

Games for 2 dozen-ish:
Snake-in-the-Grass
Siamese Soccer
Blob Tag*
Hagoo
Vampire*
Islands

I tried to pick less potentially awkward ones (it seems to be a hallmark of the 70s). Just ask if any of these sound interesting. I've starred a few that I've played and enjoyed.

Looking at Flying Dutchman again, it looks like it's aimed at a younger audience (semi-resembling Duck-duck-goose). I can still send rules if you are interested ( ... )
