Clips from a documentary about how kids get to school - comparative study of US and Japan. In Japan 98% of kids walk to school by themselves starting from age 6.
Didn't know about Switzerland, but wouldn't be surprised.
That's cool about M! When will A join him? :)
We're promising E that she will eventually do it too, but it's a 25 minute walk with lots of roads and crossings, and without the Japanese system of community safeguarding in place, which makes that kind of thing feasible, I won't really be contemplating it for a few more years...
Don't ask about A! He seems to be content for the time being, but he's been trying to test the waters, and it will be a fair few years until I feel safe enough to let him loose. He is very unlike M; M is prone to accidents ('accident prune' is his own self-description), but A is prone to mischief so I hope to (try) to keep him in check for the foreseeable future.
