Isn't it the same in Switzerland? And, yes, we have now joined the Japanese and M is proudly walking to school on his own at the ripe old age of 9.

Didn't know about Switzerland, but wouldn't be surprised.

That's cool about M! When will A join him? :)

We're promising E that she will eventually do it too, but it's a 25 minute walk with lots of roads and crossings, and without the Japanese system of community safeguarding in place, which makes that kind of thing feasible, I won't really be contemplating it for a few more years...

Don't ask about A! He seems to be content for the time being, but he's been trying to test the waters, and it will be a fair few years until I feel safe enough to let him loose. He is very unlike M; M is prone to accidents ('accident prune' is his own self-description), but A is prone to mischief so I hope to (try) to keep him in check for the foreseeable future.
