Jack has a different relationship to music, Sam has discovered. Sam likes music. It scratches a place in her brain that nothing else can reach. It is a soundtrack to her life. Her tastes are wide ranging and eclectic, and her various iPads are filled with a dizzying range of styles. When she used to work in her lab, she would play certain music to relax her, some to get her moving, and other music would alternately grab her attention, and fade into the back ground, as she focussed on the task at hand.
With Jack it's different. When he listens to music, he listens. It is never just background music to him. Oh, he does other things while he listens, because Jack is seldom still, but if you want to talk to him, and he is listening to music, he will usually turn it off, to give you his full attention ( ... )

She felt an aching loss at the loss of that interlocking and glorious sound. She didn't know whether it was because of the subject matter, or the beauty of the piece, but something wondrous had faded into time. She wondered if Jack felt that too, but he remained silent.
A deep sighing breath was the prelude.
"Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus addictis: Voca me cum benedictis," he said. "The nuns made me take Latin long before Daniel did. When the damned are consigned to the bitter flames, call me with the blessed ( ... )

Both stories are beautiful,a big thank you to both writers! I do very much like the stilted style of Requiem (I+II). But the main story is a very nice transitional piece.

I come from a family (mostly professors and lawyers) that speaks naturally in full paragraphs with an "ly" on every adverb, so I'm afraid stilted style is pretty much inevitable!
