Have you ever sat in a car for seven hours to go somewhere for a couple of weeks, only to then sit in a car for another seven hours to go back where you came from
( Read more... )
Since we have four of them (although two are now grown) we travel with kids all the time.
The disadvantages: Open warfare Whining Frequent potty stops
The advantages: Frequent potty stops with concommitant leg stretching Extra enthusiasm at the sights
We have found car trips have improved greatly since the 16 year old has decided to ignore us all in favor of her MP3 player and we got a portable DVD player for the 9 year old with a seven hour per charge battery.
And yeah, a cooler filled with fruits and veggies, and a couple of boxes of food we usually classify as food too evil to buy (like Poptarts or Doritos) make all the difference.
We always stop for uce cream. As a diabetic I cannot have any, and my husband is lactose intolerant, but we both remember the joy our fathers shared with us stopping for ice cream. It's tradition!
I can't imagine how my parents ever got through road trips with us. My brother and I are like oil and water. We don't mix well. "Open warfare" probably described it rather well, and I'm a dirty/evil fighter. :p
Haha, I also love the "evil food" thing. Since I get carsick so easily, the mere thought of Poptarts makes me gag. This never used to stop me from eating junk on trips but now... I'm ancient older and wiser and just stick to fruit and veggies. ;)
You'd like ice cream stops here, most ice cream places have ice cream for diabetics and lactose free ice cream.
I went on a road trip once with my goddaughter when she was about four. To this day we tease her about the fact that she complained about her butt hurting from sitting for four hours straight. We literally had to stop at every single rest stop so she could run around the car for a while. Heehee!
When my great grandmother was dying, my mother, my grandmother, and I , age 4, got in the car and began to drive from the Philadelphia area to the small town outside Pittsburg where she lived for the gathering of the clan and their chance to say their goodbyes (in those days children were deemed too young to be saying goodbyes). It was, in those days when the interstate highway system was still under construction, a six hour drive. I spent the whole six hours singing. One song. One line of one song
( ... )
Hahaha! Oh man, that reminds me of that one time we drove to the chocolate factory with my kindergarteners... and I had the amazing idea to sing with them. One song. For the rest of the trip all of them simultaneously sang different parts of the song and I wanted to throw myself out of the bus. Needless to say on the next bus trip (to the zoo) singing was banned on the bus. :p
Aaand thank you! Two more parts and that story is done, too. I've been having an incredible amount of fun with this one and I'm glad you like it, too. :)
my family and i used to take road trips from southern california all the way up to reno, nevada when i was a kid. (this was before the days of everyone owning a laptop, and definitely before iPods)
needless to say, my bag was PACKED with books, my cd player (and about three or four different cds) and my gameboy. the trunk (which was always accessible) had the rest of our luggage, with the food on top.
i always lucked out, being the youngest. we own an SUV, and so I would claim the backseat, stretch out my sleeping bag, and proceed to make myself a little living space, complete with bed and pillow, for the next eight hours of my life.
while road trips are monotonous, they sure can be fun! :D thanks for all the other good tips though! i might be road tripping out to montana this summer, so all good things to keep in mind!
Oh man, those good old CD player days... so much fun! I just hated how the CD kept jumping around despite the anti shock. (FIRST WORLD PROBLEM right there!)
I always had to share the backseat with my brother and couldn't read so what really helped me (and still does) on long trips is my imagination. Thank goodness for that. :p Oh, and I will be taking pictures out the window of the Alps.
