“Hey, can I…can I stay here until you get back?” Jin asked hesitantly.
“Sure.”Kame smiled. “I’ll get our bento on my way home then. I better get going.” He added as he looks at his watch.
~~~
“He really left.” Jin said to himself as he watch Kame walk off and disappear into the elevator. After the elevator’s door closed, hiding Kame from his view, he went back into the apartment and locked the door. He looked around the apartment and smiled to himself. This feels nice. He thought.
He walked to the bed and sat down on it. His hands wandered around on the bed. The unkempt bed sheet and the tangle blanket were the evidence that left for what had happened last night. Memories of last night rushed back to him and he felt his cheeks became hot and he felt like there were butterflies in his stomach. He lied down on his stomach on the bed. His face buried in the sheet and he inhaled deeply. The scent of their love making last night still lingered. He closed his eyes.
The feel of Kame’s lips on his. The taste of Kame’s skin. The way Kame writhing and squirming underneath him as he kissed every patch of the white-milky skin of Kame. The feel of Kame’s finger in his head, massaging his scalp, when he sucked Kame off. The sound, the pants and the moans Kame produced as he thrust into him. And Kame’s scream of his name when he was sent over the edge and came messily in his hand kept replying behind his eyelids. Jin felt hot all of sudden even though it was pouring outside.
Jin slowly opened his eyes and tried to calm down his heavy beating heart. He wondered why Kame had that kind of effect on him when a sudden realization hit him. His eyes widened. He quickly sat up on the bed. Not only he did not felt repulse, even a little bit, from the realization, but he even felt giddy from the thought and his heart bloom in happiness.
“I think I’m in love with you too, Kame.” After the realization, Jin felt his world become brighter than before. He felt like screaming and dancing in happiness. But, he quickly calm down himself when he remember that Kame still did not know about his feeling. “I’m going to tell him when he get back.” Jin told himself. He can’t help himself from smiling widely. He’s gonna be surprise. Jin thought. And little did he know that he’s the one who gonna be surprise.
In his happiness, he suddenly knocked the nightstand and something fell down. He looked down and saw something black at the nightstand’s foot. He quickly pick it up and realize that the something is Kame’s wallet.
“Kame forgets his wallet. How is he going to buy our lunch?” Jin asked himself. After a quick glance at the clock, he decided to make a run after Kame to give his wallet. He quickly put on the raincoat, and dashed out from the apartment, not forgetting to lock the door. Without bothering to wait for the elevator, he ran down the stairs. He needed to be quick before Kame can get too far.
As he was out of the apartment building, he ran towards their university direction. Not too far from the apartment building, he saw a commotion. There were a lot of people surrounding the area and ambulance and police were present too. He stop on his track and out of curiosity, he walked to the commotion area. His heart was beating fast because of the run, but as he approach the place, it beats became faster for an unknown reason.
He walked his way through the crowd and stand behind the yellow tape. What he saw broke his heart. There Kame was. Lying unconscious on the road. His shirt was stained red. Blood. Where did the blood came from. There were paramedics that surrounded the lying body. They were working on the body.
“KAME….” Jin shouted, gaining attention from the onlookers. He tried to make his way to the other side of the tape, but was stop by a policeman.
“Sir, please stay behind the tape.” The policeman said. Jin struggle from the policeman hold, try to make his way to his love one.
“To hell with the tape.” Jin yelled. “He is my friend. I need to go to him. He needs me. Let me go you bastard. Let me go.” Jin kept struggling from the hold; unfortunately the policeman was stronger than him.
“Calm down sir. The paramedics are trying to safe him. Please calm down.” The policeman said again.
“We got a pulse.” A sudden yelled from the paramedic cut off Jin’s retort. The policeman that was holding Jin went to the paramedic, bringing Jin along with him.
“We’re going to take him to the hospital. He’s been too long in the rain.” The paramedic told the policeman. They brought out a stretcher and placed Kame on it. The paramedic brought Kame into the ambulance and before they could close the door, the policeman spoke.
“You better go with them, sir.” The policeman told Jin. Hearing that, Jin quickly rushed into the ambulance. “He’s his friend.” The policeman explained, seeing the questioning look on the paramedic face. The paramedic nodded and closed the door, instructing the driver to go to the hospital.
Inside the ambulance, the paramedics were still working on Kame’s body. They were talking to each other. Giving orders on what to do or so Jin thought. But he didn’t care about the others. His sole attention only on the unconscious body. He was badly shaken. Please don’t leave me Kame. Not after I realize my feeling to you. I can’t live without you. Please Kame, please. He took a hold one of Kame’s hands, afraid that if the do not have any contact, Kame will leave him. He no longer can hold his tears and let them fall freely onto his cheeks.
~~~
After arrived at the hospital, Kame was quickly taken into the emergency room by the paramedics. Jin tried to enter too, but was stopped by a nurse and was asked to wait at the waiting room. In the waiting room, Jin was restless. He kept imagine the worst things that can happened to Kame in the ER. He kept walking back at forth in the waiting room. And the fact that he was alone make it worst.
Realizing that he needed to inform Kame’s family and their other friend, he quickly pulled out his phone. He called their friends first. After informing them which hospital Kame was and they promise to came as soon as possible, he quickly hung up. He, then, call Kame family and he knew that they going to take the news badly. During the dial tone resound, he prayed to god that it’s not Kame’s mother that received the call. It’s not like he dislike Kame’s mother, but with his condition right now, he can’t guarantee that he’s not going to break down again after he reveal the news to her. He was lucky that it was Kame’s brother that answered the call. He quickly told them what had happened and the hospital’s name. He then hung up and put his phone into his pocket back.
As he was waiting for their friends and Kame’s family to arrived, the door was suddenly opened and the policeman from earlier came in. He walked to Jin and stretch out his hand.
“I’m Inspector Kimura Takuya and I’m the one that’s going to handle your friend’s case.” The policeman introduced himself.
“Akanishi Jin. Kamenashi’s friend.” Jin answered, hesitantly accept the handshake. “And what do you mean by case.” He added.
“Ah, that’s his name. We tried to find his wallet or any identification, but we found none. So we thought he was robbed.” Kimura said.
“Oh, he left his wallet at home. That’s why I tried to run after him, but I can’t believe what had happened to him.” Jin explained, showing Kame’s wallet to the inspector.
“Then this is not a robbing case, since all his valuable thing except his wallet, which he left, was still on him.” The inspector mumbled to himself.
“What happened to him, Kimura-san?” Jin asked.
“Your friend was stabbed, Akanishi-kun. By whom, it is still unknown. Do you know, may de, your friend got enemies?” Kimura asked.
“Enemies? I don’t thinks so, Kimura-san. Kame is good with everyone. He’s a nice man and like to help people in need. So, I don’t think he has any enemy.” Jin explained.
“May be someone is jealous with him. Or may be he took someone’s girlfriend and that person swore revenge against him.” The inspector suggested.
“No, Kame will not take someone else girlfriend because he is……”Realizing what he was about to say to a complete stranger, Jin quickly shut his mouth. He was fidgeting in his spot
“He is what, Akanishi-kun?” The inspector urges him to complete his sentence.
“He is…umm…he is….he is…in love with me.”The last sentence came out in whisper. Jin felt his cheeks became hot. He was sure his face was as red as tomatoes.
“Oh…OH!!!.” The inspector exclaim as the words Jin whisper fully enter his brain. And much to Jin’s embarrassment, Kimura chuckle.
“There’s no need to be embarrassed about that. Love came when we lease expect them.” Kimura tried to assured Jin. Jin just nodded his head, didn’t dare to face Kimura. “Then, this case is going to be complicated. We don’t get any clue from the crime scene. All we can do now is to wait for Kamenashi-san to wake up.” Kimura sigh.
Before Jin could answered, the door open for the second time revealing Koki, Ueda, Junno, Maru and Kame’s family. They quickly rushed to Jin and bombarded him with questions. Jin tried to calm them down to no avail. A sudden coughed from behind silence them all, and all heads turn towards the sound.
“I’m Inspector Kimura Takuya and I’m the one in charge of Kamenashi-kun case. Please take a sit.” Kimura said in an authorities tone. He gesture all of them to sit while he was the only one who’s still standing.
“Like I told Akanishi-kun before, Kamenashi-kun was stabbed. The reason and by whom were still unknown. He was lucky that a passer by saw him lying on the road and quickly called for ambulance.” He explained to the people in front of him. “So is anybody here know if Kamenashi-kun has any enemies or someone who jealous of him or someone who he had hurt? Any information is important for this case because we didn’t get any clue at the crime scene and nobody there had seen what had happened.” Kimura added.
Low murmur and whisper can be heard in the room.
“No, I don’t think my brother have any enemy. And he cannot even hurt a dog, how come he can hurt people. I know my brother. He is the most kind person that I ever know.” Koji, Kame’s older brother said. Everyone in the room agree with what Koji said.
“If that’s so, I’ll take my leave now. But is any of you have any information or remember something, please give me a call.” Kimura said while giving out his cards. He, then, left the room, living it in complete silence.
After about 15 minutes, the door opened again. This time it was Ryo came in followed by Yamapi and Maki. After Maki saw Jin, he quickly walked to him and sat beside him.
“What happened?” She asked. Yamapi’s and Ryo’s attention quickly focused on Jin. Jin told them what had been told to him by Inspector Kimura. After the explanation, the room once again fell into silence. They all worried about Kame’s safety. They silently pray for Kame, hoping that everything is going to be okay.
An hour later, the door once again was opened. This time the doctor walked in. Seeing the doctor, they all rushed to the doctor’s side, eager to know the news about Kame.
“How’s my son, doctor.” Kame’s mother asked.
“He’s fine now. He is lucky that the stabbed do not touch any vital organ.” Everyone release a relief sigh, thinking that Kame was going to be okay. “But…” The doctor trailed off. All head snapped up back to the doctor.
“But, what? Just tell us, please.” Jin begged.
He looked at each of them and solemnly added “Since his heart had stopped once, the oxygen flow to his brain was stopped too, causing his brain lacking of oxygen. That’s the reason for his unconscious state. Even though we manage to revive his heart beat, unfortunately he had fallen too deep into his unconscious state.”
“What do you meant doctor?” Ueda asked.
“What I meant here is that, he may survive from the stabbed incident, but for him to regain consciousness, it was hard to tell.”
“You meant our son is in come?” Kame’s dad reaffirmed. The doctor nodded.
“How…how long will he be in that state.” Jin asked. His voice was shaky. He also can feel how badly his legs trembling. He hold onto Ryo, afraid that his legs will give up soon.
“It can take weeks, months or years. It depends on his will to live. And seeing all of you here right now, I’m sure he has a strong reason, a strong will to live. Because he knows that there are many people that care about him.” The doctor said, smiling at them.
“Can we see him now?” Koki asked.
“Yes you may. But please not all at the same time.” The doctor said “Is there anything else? If not, I’ll take my leave now.” With that, the doctor left the room, followed by Kame’s family.
The remaining occupants sat in a complete silent. The new information about Kame was still trying to sink in their mind. They still couldn’t believe on what had happened to Kame and wondering who could do that kind of thing to him.
“I want to see him.” Ueda suddenly speak up. The others looked up. They can see that he was trying hard to keep his composure, trying hard not to cry. They can understand that because, beside Jin, Ueda was the one that was really close to Kame. They had be friend since they were in elementary school and they still are even though they entered different university. They understand it was hard for Ueda to accept that his best friend was in coma.
“Yeah, me too.” The others said in unison. With that said they all get up and walk out the room towards Kame’s room. Arriving in front of Kame’s room, they wait outside, seeing that Kame’s family was still inside.
Fifteen minutes later, the door opened and Kame’s family walked out. Kame’s mother eyes were red from crying. She clings to her husband, sobbing. Kame’s father was trying to calm down his wife. There was sorrow painted on his face even though he try nit to show it. Kame’s brother was calm, but there were traces of tears on his cheeks, the only evidence left that shown that he had been crying over his brother’s fate. They settle down on the chairs in front of the room. After Kame’s family walked out, Ueda, Junno, Koki and Maru walked into the room, closing the door behind them.
“Jin.” Kame’s brother stood in front of him. “We’re off now. Can you stay with Kazuya tonight? I don’t think mom was able to stay, seeing her condition. Dad and I need to go to work tomorrow. Don’t worry. It’s only for tonight. I’ll apply for leave tomorrow.” He told Jin.
“Okay. I’ll stay with him. And you don’t have to apply for leave. I know you need to work. I can stay with him during the nights.” Jin said.
“Is it okay with you to stay with him all nights? We don’t want to bother you. I meant you still have your social life to live.” Kame’s brother looks at Jin.
“Kame never had been a bother. He is important to me. I’m would really appreciate it if you guys allowed me to stay beside him until he is awake.” Jin said. His look was determined.
“Thank you.” Kame’s brother smiled at Jin. “Kazuya was really lucky to have a friend like you, Jin.” He continued. “Then, we’ll take our leave now.” With that, he walked back to his parents and together they left the hospital.
After Kame’s family walk off, Yamapi and Ryo approach Jin. Being friends with Jin for almost their entire life, they could tell that something, besides Kame’s condition, was bothering him.
“Are you okay, Jin?” Yamapi asked. He sat beside Jin, while Ryo took the sit on the other side.
“Yeah.” Jin answered.
“Come on dude. We know smoothing was troubling you. Just tell us. Who know, maybe we could help you.” Ryo tried to pursue Jin. Yamapi nodded.
Jin looked up at his friends. He can see the concern in their eyes. He bit his lower lip, contemplating whether to tell his friends or not. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He stole a glance at Maki, who was standing not far away from them. “Well, actually there’s something I want to tell you guys, but I don’t think now was the right time.” He finally said.
“Is this thing related to Kame?” Yamapi asked. Jin only nodded his head.
“Well then, just come to us when you ready to talk about it, okay.” Again Jin just nodded his head. And the next moment was spent in silence. Everyone was drown in their own thought.
~~~
Jin slowly walked into the room and closed to the door behind him. After his friends leave, he had spent an hour outside the room, gathering his courage to face the situation inside. The room was completely silent. Kame was lying motionless on the bed at the center of the room. There were wires that attached to his body. The only thing that assured Jin that Kame was still alive was the constant beeping from the machine, indicating that Kame’s heart was still beating.
Jin took a shaky step towards the bed, and another one, and another, and another until he reached the side of the bed. He stood frozen beside the bed, looking at the person that he had come to love. Kame’s face was paler than usual. The sight of Kame broke Jin’s heart into million pieces.
Settling on the chair beside the bed, he took Kame’s hand into his. Kame’s hand felt so cold. He rubbed the hand between his hands, trying to warm it up, while his eyes never left Kame’s face. He felt his eye tearing up, but he stubbornly held them. He didn’t want Kame to see him as a weak. He had to be strong for Kame. He lean his cheek against Kame’s hand, hoping, prying that Kame will open his eyes soon. Today’s event really had taken toll on him and tiring him up, since ever so slowly, his eyelids started to drop until his eyes were completely closed.
~~~
He slowly opened his eyes, but he quickly closed them again when the bright light blinding him. He tried again, and again, and again until his eyes were adjusting to the light. He looks around him. He knew this place, but he can’t put his finger on it.
He was standing in the middle of a playground. There were many kids playing happily together while their parents were chatting at the benches provided at the playground. He walked to a bench where two women was talking. He wants to ask them where he was, but they ignore him. He tried again, but it’s still the same. It seems like they can’t hear him and that makes him panic.
A sudden loud cry caught his attention. He looked around the playground and saw a small boy, about two to three years old, crying his eyes out. The small boy was sitting on the ground, surrounded by a group of other kids. The other kids were laughing at the boy.
‘This seems familiar.’ He thought. He walked to the poor boy with the intention to tell the other kids of, unfortunately like the two women, the kids seems to ignore him too. He didn’t know what to do and seeing the poor kid’s cries, mocking by the other kids, broke his heart.
“Hey, leave him alone.” Suddenly, another boy stepped into the scene. With the new boy’s arrival, the other kids left the crying boy alone.
“Are you okay?” The new boy asked. The small boy nodded, looking up at the new boy, while rubbing his teary eyes with his little fists.
“I’m Jin. What’s your name?” The new boy asked again.
“Kame.”The smaller boy said.
“Turtle? Your name’s turtle?” Little Jin asked loudly.
“Not turtle. Name is Kame….KAME!!!!” Little Kame shouted. His eyes began to tear up again.
“Okay…okay…I’m sorry…Please don’t cry…I just joking.” Little Jin tried to coax little Kame. “Why are you crying? Are they hurting you?” Little Jin asked worriedly.
“No… I’m sad. They don’t want to play me…They say I’m too ugly…They don’t want to play with ugly people…They laugh because I’m ugly…They don’ want to be my friend” Little Kame explained, looking down at his feet. His voice started to quiver
“Don’t be sad…you’re not ugly…you’re cute…they just say that because they’re jealous. Don’t worry…I can be your friend…we will play together….okay.” Little Jin said with a bright smile.
“Really…you want to be my friend…you’re not lying?” Little Kame asked hesitantly, slowly looking up at little Jin. His eyes full with hope.
“Pinky promise.” Little Jin said, holding out his pinky finger. Little Kame slowly hooked his pinky finger with little Jin. A bright smile immediately appeared on his face.
He felt a smile bloom on his face. He remembered that day. It was the first time they met and become friend. His heart swelled with happiness. He continue to watch the two kids playing together and his earlier panic forgotten.
