WIAA tournaments (or whatever the hell they are) are back. Wrestling, this week. Downtown has been crawling with high-schoolers in letter jackets. Much fun was had at their expense in the store. Additionally, Anne (co-worker) somehow managed to accidentally throw a giftbox at a customer, and Travis (co-worker #2) managed to not only break the ( Read more... )

I just did an audio piece on the WIAA wrestling championships tonight. So I spent my whole night at the Kohl center interviewing sweaty high school boys about their experience. And then editing really quickly and getting an ulcer.

Anyway, I kind of get it now. It's a really cool thing if you're from a small town (like pretty much everyone there) and there's not much else going on.

Also...um...wrestlers have really amazing bodies, and I feel filthy for thinking that about 15-16-17-18yrolds. So pretend I'm talking about the college-age swimmers I was ogling earlier today.

Is there a podcast of the piece? area_woman February 24 2008, 15:07:14 UTC
Oh, I definitely get that it's a neat experience for the kids. All my co-workers are from small towns, several have little brothers who did that sort of thing. Even those co-workers hate the WIAA kids. Everyone on State Street hates the WIAA kids. XD

...They were all covered up in letter jackets when I saw them, so I'm going to leave that last bit alone. <3

No podcast, but you can go to it on the web at http://www.madison.com/wsj/media/wrestling/index.html. It's actually audio plus photos, but the photographer was the one who picked the visual layout.

I have to disclaim with the fact that I edited the audio in about an hour and a half, and didn't ask the right questions in the first place.

P.S. You should stop by the store sometime, I'll get you coffee or something. I haven't talked to you in ages.

yeah, they seem so lost and confused. like,"this is such a big city, cause i'm from the middle of no where, where's my mommy".
High schoolers are also very bad, and highly inconsiderate costumers. Serving them sux.

Oh, we didn't get the lost ones, we got the "2 cool 4 skool" types. One wanted to know if we carried money clips, and made his friend ask us 'cause he was too cool to ask for help. It was amazing.

Oh man, one of my cousins (from tiny little town up north) visited me a few years ago and shadowed me for a day in highschool... and she felt like she had to be all tough and cool. It was kind of funny and sad at the same time.
