A guy I know broke his finger recently. By cracking his knuckles. He's in a big-ass forearm cast, too, not just a finger splint.

You have no idea how much this freaks me out.

As a compulsive knuckle-cracker, you have no idea how much this terrifies me. Wait. Maybe you do...

Does he have osteoporosis or another bone disorder? Is he calcium deficient? That sounds like he must have either already had some kind of stress fracture or he must have had deficient bones somehow. That doesn't sound like it's possible for normal people.

Also, the big-ass cast thing would lead me to think he shattered or aggravated a previous fracture.

Not as far as I know. He's a pretty sturdy-looking guy, and I don't think he plays any rough sports.

But it's reassuring to know that's not a common injury. Thanks, doc. :)

Fingers don't fracture at the drop of a hat - think of how many times you've smooshed them or banged them into things without any serious problems. They're quite sturdy little guys, unless you do some damage and then some more damage and then put pressure on them. Or something like that.

My friend shattered her finger in a gate once. That stank. But it took a whole gate to shatter her finger bone.
