I'm tired and cranky.

There was a conversation the other day about how kids' movies (mainly Disney) are utter crap these days. I'm watching the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," and it really is true. The new version, as much as I love Johnny Depp, is SHIT. The Gene Wilder version may not have all the expensive digital effects, but it's clear there ( Read more... )

I hated the old version of the movie. Gene Wilder struck me as MUCH creepier (in a bad way). The book was one of my favorites, and I didn't think the movie followed it well at all. The new version does a better job for me.

I don't mind the new Disney movies, although I only watch the ones I think will be good or have heard are good, so my statistics aren't all-encompassing.

Hmm. I'm sure I read the book at some point, but it wasn't a favorite. So I'm not really aware of how much either movie follows or doesn't follow the book.

Really, though? You find Gene Wilder creepier than Michael Jackson Depp!Wonka?

Hell yeah. I thought he was incredibly creepy in all the movies I saw him in. He's like a clown without makeup. CREEPY! D:

Also, Gene Wilder's genial affability with the children and 'soft gentle voice' is much more aligned with a characteristic pedophile.... he welcomes the good little children into his magical land of wonders with his slack face and soothing words.

Depp's Wonka - while not necessarily the one that is usually imagined, is more like socially inept (something I can identify with) than some kind of predator.

Let's agree to disagree. (going to rag on the old charlie movie - just so you're aware)

I personally hated the old movie version of Charlie. The kid was abysmally american, and he was an idiot - so I couldn't sympathize with him at all, and didn't even want to look at him. I really like the Charlie of the new version - much more sensitive and sweet, without the sickly overacting of mr. americano.

I always felt that Gene Wilder was not even creepy (which would have been appropriate for the character) he was just soft and doughy and flat. I'm not impressed with him as an actor, and I think he cheapened the entire film. The only bit I liked was when he ate the teacup. So many of my friends think that oooh he was so creepy when going down the chocolate river but no. project some lame images of worms on faces and spiders and whatever onto the ceiling, have a major spaz and scream at your passengers oh noes.

Also, the oompa loompas of the old film = giant WTF. Big fucking orange clowns = lamesauce. Granted, the ones of the new film ( ... )

Man, I love how Jacki does actual research before replying to stuff... XD

...every scene feels as staged as a high school spanish video.
Oh, the memories that analogy brings back...I knew there was a reason Jacki was a Wordmaster's champion...
