CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

"Nice, you stole my truck?"

Jensen laughed, pushing away from where he leant against the side of Chris's pick-up. He opened the passenger side door and stood aside as Chris neared him, being pushed along in a wheelchair by a homely looking nurse. There was a male nurse with her, too, and Jensen helped him get Chris up into the truck, shaking his head at the comments he received from his friend.

"My mom would have picked me up, y'know. Is this just more guilty conscience?" Chris asked, as Jensen got in the driver's seat and started the engine, thanking the nurses for their help through the open window.

"Nah. But your mom wouldn't have taken you to Burger King on the way home. Figure you've earned that cheeseburger now."

Chris smiled over at him. "Damn straight. Where's Jay?"

"Working in the garage. You want to go see him?"

"I just want to get home. You bitches got to come visit me for a change. Hopefully this'll all get better real quick so I can get out of mom's hair."

"And back into Steve's. Well, that's not a problem. Since the bar's not open, Jay doesn't have work so we can come over and help your mom out with you tonight. She's already said it's fine. Jay reckons you might need help showering." Jensen's mouth twitched as he tried not to grin. "Maybe help jerking off."

Chris rolled his eyes and reached out to shove Jensen's shoulder. "You're both dicks. But you're probably right. I'd rather you see me naked than my mom."

"Hey, you know, if we're both dicks we can always send Lynn over-"

"Ain't gonna let that lie, huh?" Chris interrupted, loudly, and Jensen laughed in response. The cab was filled with their voices as they yelled over one another, Chris trying to ignore Jensen's teasing and Jensen trying to get his friend to blush. He had told Chris that Lynn was single and, a couple of days ago, Chris had asked her out. Stupidly, in Jensen's opinion (which he voiced now, loud and clear), she had agreed to a date as soon as he was feeling up to it. Truthfully he was glad to see Chris taking an interest again, gladder still that it was someone like Lynn.

"Are you going to tell her about everything?" Jensen asked, stopping for a set of lights.

"About the three of us?" Chris asked. Jensen nodded in reply. "Yeah. I think I'll tell her on the first date. That's fair, right? At least then there's no secrets. If she still falls for me then it's all good."

"She'll fall for you. I get the feeling she already has. She called you my hot friend, Chris. If that ain't love..."

"You know when this leg gets better I'm gonna use it to kick your ass from here to Tahiti, right?"

Jensen told him to just keep on dreaming as he pulled into the burger joint's parking lot. He parked the truck and then hurried around the front to help Chris out. He handed him his crutches and made sure he was steady before he let go. As light as the mood had been in the truck, it pained him to see how awkward his friend looked as he slowly made his way inside. He was hurting, that was obvious, his healing ribs jarring with every step. He made Chris sit down and went to order them both lunch, getting a plain burger for himself and a cheeseburger with the works for Chris. He got them a milkshake too and took everything over to the booth Chris had chosen, setting it down and sliding into the seat opposite him.

The place was busy; it was a Saturday so that was expected. There were a few there that Jensen recognised from his classes, though he wasn't sure of their names. He looked around as he ate, watching the people that were there. One group in particular caught his eye and he had to do a double-take, then nudge Chris's arm while he tried not to laugh.

"Dude, what?"

"Kenzie's over there."

Chris turned to look and Jensen squeezed his wrist, telling him not to.

"Why not?"

"I don't think she's noticed me yet. She's with her friends anyway. Remember when little sisters didn't wear more hair product than you and when they didn't wear makeup?"

Smiling, Chris shook his head. "What do you expect? She's trying to get laid from here on out."

Jensen wrinkled his nose and shuddered. "She's not even close to sixteen, Chris."

His friend shrugged. "Doesn't matter any more. Sex is all girls think about and they think we're perverts. It's sick."

He didn't want to hear it, but he knew Chris was probably right. Kenzie knew a lot more than he gave her credit for and he knew that it was partly his and Jared's fault. He wondered if she ever got any trouble for her brother being gay. He probably should have asked her. The thought that he hadn't made him feel uncomfortable. He and Chris finished their burgers and he picked up his shake, watching his sister who looked like she was going to stay where she was for a while yet. Kenzie and her friends were in a booth at the back, their conversation punctuated with noisy giggles and squeals that made the family on the table next to them keep looking around.

"C'mon. We'll just go say hello."

"Jen, she won't appreciate it, trust me."

"Relax, I'm not going to embarrass her. I think her friend's got a crush on either me or you anyway. Might as well throw them a bone."

Chris put his hands down on the table and used it for leverage to get himself out of the booth. Jensen held him up while he got his crutches under his arms and then he made sure he was okay before he let go.

"Still think this is a bad idea," Chris muttered, but he followed Jensen over to the noisy table in the corner anyway. He supposed that Jensen could look worse for disturbing his sister's Saturday. At least he didn't look like Daddy's son any more. Blue jeans, heavy boots and leather jacket made up an outfit that was bound to go down well with a bunch of teenage girls.

One of the other girls noticed Jensen first and said something to Kenzie and the table went a bit quieter as, one by one, they turned to look at him. Kenzie was blushing furiously. "Hey," she said, as Jensen stopped by their table. "Hi, Chris. You doing okay?"

"Just got out today," he told her, shifting his weight on the crutches. One of Kenzie's friend looked hard at him and then nudged her friend and he swore he heard her asking, 'hey, is that Chris Kane?' He didn't recognize her and wondered where she might know him from.

"You staying out of trouble, sis?"

Kenzie rolled her eyes. "Like I'm the one who gets in trouble." It was supposed to be a sarcastic comeback, but it definitely lacked edge. He wondered what the hell was up with her.

"Where's Jared?" That was Tiffy, Kenzie's new best friend. Jensen wondered just why she wanted to know.

"Work," he told her. "I'd better get going. Bye, Kenz."

She lifted a hand and waved at him, looking mostly like she wished the ground would swallow her. Jensen didn't know when he had become such an embarrassment to her, so he left pretty quick, with Chris following at the best pace he could manage. He helped his friend into the truck outside and then sat with the key in the ignition, the engine off.

"What the hell?"

"I told you," Chris reminded him. "Likely scenario? One or more of her friends has a crush on you or Jared. Or both of you. And Kenzie's sat there wondering if she's their friend because of you, or because they actually want to be her friend. And she's worried that they're using her to get the goods on you or, worse, she's using them because she wants to feel like a part of the crowd and you're all she's got to make her popular."

"Are you serious? The oldest one there was fourteen. Do they honestly think they stand a chance-"

"Hey, I never claimed to be an expert on teenagers. Or on girls. Just telling you what I think, that's all. Heads up." Chris had barely finished saying that before there was a tap at the window and Jensen rolled it down so his sister could lean in.

"I'm sorry," he said, before she could even start on him. "I forgot you're not allowed to be my little sister when we're out in public."

She sighed, resting her folded arms on the edge of the window. "It's okay. It's just... It's kind of weird. Having my friends tell me they think you're hot. You're my brother. It's not like I can agree. Plus I know what a dork you are in real life. They just see the tattoos and the leather jacket."

"Have you tried telling them that he's a complete jerk?"

Jensen looked over at Chris. "Thanks, buddy. That's a real help."

Kenzie pursed her lips. "You know nothing about girls, huh? The bigger a jerk he is, the more attractive it makes him. But then if he's always really nice to everyone, that just makes him sweeter. And more attractive. It's a lose-lose situation."

"Not for me," Jensen said, ducking back when Kenzie reached through the window and punched his arm. "All right, sorry! I promise I'll leave you alone. And all your weird little friends. Who seem to think I'm some kind of pedophile." He narrowed his eyes, leaned towards her. "You should straighten them out on that one, okay?"

"Sure thing, Jensen."

"You'd better get back in there before they come outside and start asking for my autograph."

"They're more likely to ask for Chris's," Kenzie told him. "He's the famous one, not you."

"Famous, right," Chris muttered. "We missed our chance for that, but thanks."

"You mean the gig at the U? Jared told me about it," Kenzie explained, at the look on both their faces. "When I called the other night and you were too busy studying to talk to me. But Tiffy's brother knows someone who works there and he said the gig got rescheduled. He told me about it because he knows you're best friends with my brother and wanted to know if I could get him a free ticket. I told him no, since a quarter of the ticket sales goes to charity..." She trailed off when she saw how puzzled Chris was looking. "Didn't you know?"

"No, I didn't. Steve must've forgot to tell me. When is this gig?"

"Next Friday night."

"Huh."

"I hope I didn't mess anything up. Maybe it was meant to be a secret."

Jensen smiled at Kenzie and shook his head. "I doubt it. And don't worry. Come over tomorrow if you can, huh? Jay would love to see you. I'm sure Mom won't mind if you stay for lunch too."

Kenzie grinned back, a real smile, and agreed.

Jensen let her step back before he started the engine. He tossed his phone towards Chris. "Call Steve. Find out what's going on."

It was their thing. Something Jensen started as a joke. But the 'honey, I'm home!' died on his lips when he realized that Jared wasn't alone. He was sat at the counter in the kitchen, with Mickey on the only other chair in there, and Jeff and Phin behind him, looking over his shoulder. They were all watching Jensen now, Jared trying to fight off a smile at the enthusiastic greeting. Jeff didn't try to stop his. He smirked at Jensen.

"Hi, honey," he said, winking.

Jensen frowned. "What's going on? Is everything okay?"

"It's fine. We're just going over some designs for the bar. C'mere..."

Jensen neared his boyfriend, his heart-rate climbing for some reason the closer he got to Mickey and Phin. He knew neither of them would hurt him, or do anything, but it still didn't stop him feeling agitated. Mickey made a noise of exasperation as Jared pulled Jensen close and kissed him, briefly. "What am I paying you for, Padalecki? Canoodling or doodling?"

"I missed my man, okay?"

"Well tell him how much when I'm not here. You guys might like it, but I can feel my dick shrivelling up right now."

Jared started to roll up the designs, telling Mickey he could go fuck himself. Jensen's eyes widened, but Mickey merely laughed loudly and flattened the papers back out.

"Okay, okay," Mickey said. "You got a five minute break. Make the most of it."

Amazed that Mickey hadn't pounded Jay's ass into the ground for his comment, Jensen didn't resist when he was pulled towards the bedroom. Jared shut the door behind them, locked it, and then pushed Jensen up against it and claimed his mouth in a deep, wet kiss. Jensen kissed back for a moment or two and then carefully pushed at Jared's chest until he stepped back. It felt weird to be doing this with three other people in the apartment, and he told Jared so.

"You want me to tell 'em to leave?"

Jensen shook his head, shivering at the way Jared's fingers were kneading into his shoulders. It felt really good. "Mickey's pissed enough," he mumbled. "And I don't want to see him get more pissed."

"Then maybe we should just do like he told us." Jared's hands moved and he dropped to a crouch in front of Jensen, wasted no time in unbuckling his belt and teasing it free of the loops on his jeans. Jensen didn't even get a chance to ask what he thought he was doing, couldn't get himself coherent enough to ask, before Jared's mouth was on him, fingers holding his dick as Jared sucked on it and got him hard. With no choice but to let him, Jensen threaded his fingers into Jared's hair and let his head thump back against the door, breathing harshly through his mouth. Jared's lips were all over his dick and he could feel himself trembling, knees shaking as they fought to keep holding him up.

Jared pulled away for a second, looking up at him with eyes full of sin.

"You gonna yell when you come, Jen? Or are you going to hold it all in so they don't know what we're doing? Like they can't guess..."

Jensen exhaled, hard, his teeth gritted together. Jared went back to work, humming and moaning around his cock, and he knew that the three men in the other room would be able to hear every sound. He wished that they would put some music on, or the TV, or that he would hear the door slamming as they left so that-

"Gyagh... Fuck!" He pushed his head back hard against the door, his throat exposed and muscles straining as he tried to keep control. Jared's spit-slicked fingers moved further back, circling, and his knees gave out then. Jared held him up, sucking him down deep until the head of his cock was nudging the back of his boyfriend's throat. He came, came hard, and no sound came out of his mouth when he opened it. He could feel blood welling up from a small bite on his lower lip. He gasped for air and Jared finally, finally, let him go. Caught him as he went down.

"Gotcha," Jared panted, lifting him up to reach his mouth again. They kissed, gently, and Jensen curled in on himself when Jared let him go and closed his eyes at the pleasure that was still coursing through his body. He slid down, wound up on the floor with his head cradled between Jared's legs. He smiled when he felt Jared's fingers in his hair. The man had a knack of making him feel like he was the most important person in the world, right after making him do something so dirty.

Jensen forced his eyes to open again. "You should get back in there," he managed.

"Yeah. I should."

"You really missed me?"

There was a huff of laughter from above him. "It wasn't obvious enough? How's Chris?"

"Doing okay. I said we'd go over there tonight. Looks like you're busy though."

Jared nodded, ran a hand through his own hair. "Yeah. Guess I am. I'm sorry. You okay to go over there without me?"

"If you don't mind us having all that sex without you," Jensen teased, sitting up again.

"So long as it's only sex," Jared joked. "And maybe I'll get over there later, too."

"I hope so. I'm going to stay in here a while. I have to get some studying done before I go over to Chris's."

"Okay. We'll be quiet." Jared got up and helped Jensen to his feet, watching him redress. He kissed him, quickly, and then unlocked the door and headed back out to the accompaniment of catcalls from Mickey and Jeff. Jensen listened to him telling them to shut up and grinned to himself. Jared was probably right. They'd only been doing what was expected of them. He shut the bedroom door again and grabbed his books from the side of the bed, spreading them out in front of him.

When Jensen left, a couple of hours later, Jeff had already gone. Phin and Mickey were still there, huddled around the kitchen counter going over the schedule for the rebuild. Mickey was on his phone every other minute, though Jensen didn't listen to what he was saying. He was watching the way Phin and Jared were so easy together. He was feeling irritated by it, for no rational reason. He said nothing, though, having realized that it was best to keep his mouth shut about Phin when he was around Jared. His boyfriend clearly saw nothing wrong with the guy. Jensen knew he shouldn't, either, but it was hard not to feel something, some spike of jealousy, that the other man had just come back into Jay's life after years out of it and slotted in like he belonged there.

"You going?" Jared asked, watching Jensen sling a backpack over his shoulder and take a bottle of water from the refrigerator.

"Yeah."

As Jensen went past him, Jared reached out an arm and drew him in, squeezed a hand around his shoulder. "Give Chris my love. In case I can't make it."

"I will." Jensen knew what he meant. He said goodbye to Phin and Mickey and headed out, going down to where he'd parked Chris's truck earlier. He'd been told to look after it, just for now, and had to admit it was easier to have it now that Jared couldn't make it. He drove over with the radio off, enjoying the silence in the cab. Chris's mother let him in, gave him a warm hug, asked him how Jay was doing. He followed her into the lounge where the sofa had been pulled out into a bed for Chris. He was set up there, his leg stretched out in front of him, and a pile of pillows behind his back. Jensen didn't even ask, just sat down beside him and stole the bowl of popcorn that he had in his lap. "What're we watching?" He asked.

"Godzilla remake."

"You're kidding, that movie sucks."

"You don't get to choose Cagney movies this time, pal. You're not the one that's all messed up."

"Yeah, but Godzilla?"

"At least the monster's not a guy in a crappy rubber suit. Oh, wait, you probably like that kind of thing, huh?"

"Why is that?"

Evelyn left them to their good-natured bickering, told Chris that she was going to fix them both a proper dinner. She wasn't sure he was even listening anyway.

As soon as she was gone, Chris sighed and fell back into the pillows behind him. "Thank God you're here. I love my mom, but she's driving me frigging crazy already and it's been three hours. She thinks I'm gonna break, I swear."

"She's just doing what moms do, Chris."

"I know, but I'm really okay. And she's been going on about me getting cleaned up right since I got in. You know? If you hadn't already told her you were coming over, I bet she'd have dragged me up them stairs and given me a goddamn bed-bath already."

"You want me to take you upstairs and give you a bed-bath?"

Chris smirked. "Sure, why not? I know you don't want to watch crappy movies with me all night."

Jensen called through to the kitchen to let Evelyn know what they were doing and she told him that was fine, just not to be too long since she'd have dinner ready within the hour. An hour was going to be long enough, he figured. Chris grabbed his crutches and, with Jensen's help, he managed to make it upstairs without incident.

"So what did Steve have to say?" Jensen asked, as he shut the bathroom door behind them.

"He said they were given the chance to reschedule, so they took it. Said if I'm not up to it they can manage without me. Like that's going to happen."

"I guess he thought he was doing you a favor. You do this gig, you get a bunch more. Right?"

"Right."

"What about Lynn? Did you call her and arrange a date yet?"

"Can we get me cleaned up now?"

Jensen laughed at Chris's avoidance of the subject, but gave into it. For now. Chris unzipped his pants and sat down on the lid of the toilet to pull them off. Then he got his shirt off and sat there in his underwear. Jensen tugged his own teeshirt up over his head and shoved it over the towel rail. He looked when Chris pointed at a tall box next to the basin. DRY PRO was on the label. Jensen resisted the joke.

"There. Gotta put that on over the cast so I can get in the shower."

"How do I-"

"Should be instructions in the box. Doc recommended Mom buy it for me so I can still shower and stuff."

Jensen got everything out of the box and after about five minutes of grunting, of his head practically resting in Chris's crotch while he wrestled him into the damned thing, they were ready. He asked Chris if he was going to keep his shorts on, since it seemed to defeat the object somewhat, and Chris shook his head. He let Jensen take them off him and sat there, naked, while Jensen finished stripping off his own clothes. He set the shower going and then got Chris into the large cubicle, shut the glass door. Chris steadied himself, a hand against either wall.

"You all right? Won't fall over if I let go?"

Chris nodded. "I'm okay."

Taking a deep breath, Jensen moved his hands away from his friend. Watched to make sure he didn't sway off-balance as he grabbed a bottle of shower gel. He squeezed out a generous amount and started with Chris's shoulders, rubbing it into his skin. It produced a generous amount of lather which he spread over Chris's shoulder-blades and back with open hands. This wasn't supposed to be anything other than helping his best friend, he kept telling himself that, but he couldn't help noticing the hitch in the other man's breath, or how he kept having to stop himself from leaning forward and kissing Chris's neck.

He reached around to Chris's front, kept massaging the soap in and trying not to think about anything else. It seemed more uncomfortable this time, doing it without Jared here.

"Chris, can you-"

"Yeah. No problem. Don't let me fall." His voice sounded strained and Jensen couldn't blame him. "This is weird, huh?"

"Little bit."

"I'm sorry. I thought it'd be okay."

Jensen sighed, kept a firm hand around Chris to keep him upright. "It is. Honestly."

Once Chris had finished soaping himself up, and Jensen had rubbed some shampoo into his hair, he got back under the spray and let it all wash off. Jensen helped him out and got a towel around him. Chris sat back down on the toilet lid to start drying himself off and Jensen grabbed a towel himself. He dried a lot quicker than Chris did, and dressed in the clothes he'd brought in with him. Left Chris on his own while he went across the hall to his friend's bedroom and found him some clean clothes that he could wear to bed if he needed to. Chris's skin was still slightly damp as Jensen helped him into the clothes, but he didn't complain about it.

They got back downstairs in time to find dinner being served up and Evelyn fussed around her son as he took a seat at the table, propping his leg up on another chair. Chris asked about whether Adam and Katie's date had gone ahead, and Jensen told him they'd made new plans since the gig got cancelled. He knew they hadn't been out yet, and that the delay was making Adam even more nervous about it.

"He needs to chill out about it. They'll be great together."

"As will you and Lynn."

Jensen missed the look too late, but he certainly caught it when Chris's mom looked up and frowned. "Lynn?" It was a look that said, 'thanks a lot. I'll get you back for this.'

"She's a girl from one of Jensen's classes. We're going out sometime this week."

"Oh. So you're not going to get back together with Dani?"

Chris shifted under his mom's scrutiny and Jensen studied his plate hard, wishing he'd kept his mouth shut.

"No, mom. We're very definitely over."

"That's a shame. She was such a nice girl."

"Mostly," Chris agreed. "There was just a few things that we didn't see eye to eye on. And a few things like that is enough."

Evelyn reached over and patted Chris's hand. "I know, son. So, what's Lynn like?"

"You seriously had to mention Lynn?"

"I didn't know it was such a big deal. I thought you'd have told her already."

Chris shook his head. "No, because you saw what happens when she finds out anything like that. I get the third degree whether I know anything or not. I'm actually scared to bring Lynn over here. That's why I need to get back to mine and Steve's place as soon as possible, so that shit like this don't happen."

"No, instead you get Steve either trying to hit on her or listening to you having sex through the apartment walls."

Chris laughed. "Yeah, maybe. He's got his own girlfriend now, though. It's lasted a few weeks now so maybe he's going to keep it up this time."

"The female population can only live in hope, I guess. You want another drink?"

Shrugging, Chris eased himself back further in the sofa bed. "I'm good."

They were in the front room, both under a king-size sheet on the bed, with the TV playing an old black and white movie and the volume down low. It was dark outside and Chris's mom had gone upstairs to bed a half hour ago. Jensen had given up on Jared coming over, and found himself thinking too hard about his boyfriend and Phin on their own in the apartment. Doing god knew what. He wanted to phone, but he didn't. He thought it was better to wonder about it than to know.

"You all right?" Chris asked.

"Yeah," Jensen answered, trying not to sound too distracted.

"You sure?"

He leaned his head against Chris's shoulder. "I'm sure. I'm just worried about this new guy that's come back to town. Phin. Jay's old buddy."

"What're you worried about?"

He sighed, closing his eyes. "They're just... They're real close, you know? It's like Jay loses time when he's with him and-"

"And you're jealous of them."

"Maybe. A little bit. What if Jay starts to go back to how he used to be? And what if that includes not dating preppy idiots like me?"

Chris slung his arm around Jensen's shoulder and kissed the top of his head. "You know what I think?"

"That I'm an ass?"

"Yes, you're an ass. And Jay loves you like crazy. He's really sticking to the promise you two made each other. Like this Coulter thing, for example. He's doing everything right, by the book. Doesn't that tell you something?"

Jensen knew Chris was right. It didn't stop him from feeling anxious though. The Coulter thing seemed to be taking its time. Jensen knew, from living with his Dad for so many years, that these things did take time. But it just seemed like the longer Jared's going to court got delayed, the more likely it seemed to Jensen that Coulter would get away with everything. They still hadn't been given a date for Jared to go and testify. Just kept getting told that it wouldn't be too much longer. It was making him impatient and, in terms of the time the law usually took, it hadn't even been that long. Chris still had his mouth against Jensen's hair and Jensen moved his head, letting the kiss drag over his temples.

Chris mumbled Jensen's name against his skin. Jensen ignored him, knowing what he was trying to say, and caught Chris's mouth with his. Kissed him quietly. It didn't last too long. They both pulled away simultaneously, and Jensen flopped back against the pillows.

"Sorry," he muttered. "I'm being a jerk."

"Yeah, you kind of are." Chris lay back next to him, turned his head to study Jensen's profile. "You know I normally wouldn't mind. Hell, I'd be jumping at the chance. But you need to talk to Jared first."

"What if I don't want to?" Jensen looked across at his friend, his expression more serious than Chris had seen it in a while.

"Tough shit, Scrubs," Chris said, grinning when Jensen rolled his eyes at the nickname. "You know what you've got to do."

It was even later, now. Jensen couldn't see the clock, but he thought it was around two in the morning. He hadn't been able to sleep yet, too hot even with the window pulled partly open, but Chris was snoring softly next to him. He started to turn over and then froze at a scraping noise from outside. It was followed by a thump and he quickly nudged Chris awake.

"Wha-"

Jensen clapped a hand over Chris's mouth, shaking his head to tell him to shut up. There was another soft thumping sound and then a creak by the window.

"Shit, shit..." Jensen's heart was pounding and he started to reach out for the lamp-switch that was nearby. "Who's there?" He asked, his fingers searching for the cord. There was the sound of somebody grunting as they climbed up through the window and Jensen found the switch just as they dropped to the floor. A dim light spread out from the lamp and Jensen looked across to the window in disbelief.

"Surprise," Jared said, grinning from where he was crouched on the floor.

"Jared, why couldn't you use the front door, you fucker?" Chris sounded like he was still half-asleep.

Jared straightened and Jensen felt his breath leave him at how gorgeous the man was. "Because then it wouldn't be a surprise. Obviously."

Jensen watched as Jared stood in front of the window and stripped off his jacket and teeshirt, toed off his boots, shucked off his jeans. In nothing more than his skivvies, he approached the pair on the pull-out bed and lifted one leg to rest his knee on the edge of it. He grinned down at them both, looking real dirty. "Room for a little one?"
