Mayan Gold

"So."

After a few seconds, Jensen looked up from his open textbook. From his place at the dining table, Jensen looked around the living room. The house was an open floor plan, so he could easily see into the next room, down the hall to the small guest room. In the living room, Jared stood, his hands behind his back, staring over at Jensen.

Jensen hadn't heard him come in, really, but he wasn't surprised. It was that time of day anyway, when Jared came home, a little greasy, a lot sweaty, and in his usual good spirits. Jensen arched his eyebrows, watching him. "So, what?"

Jared shrugged. "I dunno."

Already frustrated with his homework, Jensen didn't want any further annoyances. "Jay, I'm really busy," he complained. "I don't want to play guessing games. What's going on?"

"Oh." He looked disappointed. Hurt.

Frowning, Jensen pushed away from the table, heaving a sigh as he did. He glanced around the room, spying the spare highchair for when they babysat Corey, the booster seat for Holly. He made a mental note to suggest they head over to Stevie and Jeff's. He missed the little ones. "I'm sorry," he apologized, rubbing at his eyes. "What's wrong?"

Jared shook his head. "Nothing's wrong."

"What was the 'so' for?"

"I dunno."

"Jared."

"I was just thinking." He was smiling now, the devil shining in his eyes.

Jensen scrutinized him, his eyes narrow. "About what?" he asked, slowly, warily.

"Just about life."

He was still skeptical. "What about it?"

Taking a deep breath, Jared shifted his weight to the opposite foot, his hands still clasped behind him. "It's short," he said. "We should take as many opportunities as we can."

"Okay..."

"So, I was thinking." He paused and raised an eyebrow at Jensen. "What do you think about adding something to the whole thing we have going on here?"

Jensen's skeptical look faded, leaving one of utter shock. Surely, Jared wasn't talking about what he thought he was talking about. "Adding what?"

Jared shrugged. "Something gold?"

Jensen immediately thought of the promise rings they both wore. Could it be that Jared was ready to completely commit? It was silly to think of it that way, because Jensen knew that Jared was his, without a question. But it was the only gold thing he could think of.

He couldn't take the hints and the cryptic messages anymore. "Jared, are you sure?"

"Of course I am," he grinned. "What do you say?"

Standing from his chair, Jensen laughed excitedly. "I say yes," he returned, nearly trembling with joy.

"Good." Jared took his hands from behind his back and raised them to Jensen's eye-level. In his hands was a tiny gold puppy with big, dark eyes and a curled tail. Her fat, round belly was visible, and her big puppy paws looked too big for the rest of her. "Her name's Maya."

It wasn't, of course, the same kind of gold or addition to the family that Jensen had been thinking of, but the second he saw the little dog, he didn't care about that other stuff. He reached out, cooing, and took her into his arms, chuckling when she licked at his face, seeming to like the feel of beard stubble on her tongue. "Hi, Maya," he said.

Jared sat down on the sofa, gently guiding Jensen down with him. He put his arm around them both, watching as the puppy moved back and forth between her two new Dads.

"Where did you get her?" Jensen asked.

"A guy down on the west side," Jared said.

"That's a rough part of town," he returned.

"Yeah, I was with Phin. We went out to drop off the Harley for Old Man Futter and she was stuck in the asshole neighbor's apartment in a chicken-wire cage," he explained. Since he'd been working at the garage, the owner had started taking in more bikes to work on, since he had Jared's expertise at hand. The bar still took up more of Jared's time, but he wouldn't ever stay away from the garage. He loved working on the bikes far too much. "No food or water. I hate animal cruelty, so I killed him and stole her."

Smile fading, Jensen turned to look at Jared as best he could.

Laughing boisterously, Jared slapped the palm of his hand against one knee. "I'm kidding," he said. "He's okay. Mostly."

Jensen shook his head. "You're such a jerk," he mumbled. He looked back down at the puppy, who had decided that Jensen's thumb was a mortal enemy and had latched onto it. He talked softly to the dog, telling her not to bite. "What kind is she?"

"Well, there's a big Korean population on that side of town," Jared explained. "So I'm thinking she might be at least half Jindo. Maybe more."

"She's adorable either way."

It was quiet for a few minutes, both of them just gazing down at the puppy on Jensen's lap. She was attempting to gnaw on his thumb, in between licking the appendage and gazing around the room.

"When you asked if I was sure..." Jared began, pulling his gaze away from the pup.

Jensen tried not to look alarmed. He had thought of something different, and didn't want to be ridiculed for it. "What? Oh, nothing," he lied. "I was just making sure you wanted to take on a responsibility like this."

He shook his head. "But you didn't know I had her with me."

Jensen shrugged his shoulders. "I just knew."

Silence fell over them for another few seconds, until Jared laughed, his whole body rocking with the guffaw. "You thought I meant marriage, didn't you?"

"What?" Jensen said, a disbelieving scowl upon his face. "No."

"Yes, you did."

He was found out, he couldn't hide anymore. "Well, you said gold, Jay," he said, defensive.

"I didn't mean rings," he returned, still smiling.

Frowning, Jensen looked down at the puppy. As much as he already adored her, he couldn't help but be somewhat disappointed.

"I ain't the marryin' kind, Jen," he said. "You know that."

Jensen nodded. "I know," he said quietly. "I just assumed. And you know what happens when you assume."

"Hey," Jared said. He reached over and hooked Jensen's chin with his finger, forcing him to look up at him. "I like your ass."

Even though he didn't want to, Jensen smiled. "You're biased," he told him.

Nodding, Jared mumbled an agreement as he leaned in closer, covering Jensen's mouth with his own. Their mouths made wet, comfortable sounds against the other's, interrupted suddenly by a very warm, wet puppy tongue. Maya gave both her new Dads a kiss, then barked at them, wanting to play.

Jensen sputtered at the dog spit on his cheek and laughed. He looked down at her, finding her soulful little eyes staring back at him. She wagged her tail and barked again, attemping to thrust her butt up in the air, her chest upon Jensen's legs. He laughed at her again, his eyes glittering with puppy love.

The little girl was definitely worth keeping.
