BAD BEHAVIOR
Staring at Jared as though he was crazy, Phin held up both hands and shook his head. Took a step back, even, as if putting that little bit of extra distance between them would help.
"C'mon," Jared said, needling. "He won't even notice it's gone. We'll just ride it up and round the block and bring it right back."
'It' was Rock's Harley, the only motorbike he'd owned since the accident that had earned him his nickname. Phin knew that. He knew the Harley was his dad's pride and joy and he knew exactly what would happen if Jared took it and wound up off-roading. Which he would, Phin knew, because he hadn't had enough experience on heavy motorbikes like that one was. It was fine and well that Jeff had given him some lessons, had let him ride a much smaller model on his own, but that was out in the back-end of nowhere, where there were no cops, no pedestrians, no parked cars that he could crash into.
"No. No way," Phin said again, taking another step back. "There's no way he won't find out. And once he's done ripping you a new one then it'll be my fuckin' turn."
Jared sighed, his shoulders sagged. He looked longingly at the Harley, but, thank god, moved away from it. "You're a goddamn pussy, Phin."
Phin didn't care. He was just glad he'd gotten Jared to give up on the idea. "Hey, when it comes down to a choice between you and gettin' the shit beat outta me by my old man then I'm sorry. Family comes first. Let's get back in there before they start to miss us."
Grumbling as he followed Phin inside, Jared was quick to go to the bar. Rock was behind it, along with Mickey, and Jeff was sat at the counter with a beer in front of him. Jeff frowned at Jared and Phin, watched the boys pull up their own stools.
"Where the hell have you pair been?" he growled.
"Nowhere. Out back."
"Which is it?"
"We were just checkin' out their rides," Jared answered, indicating the crowd of bikers that had come in not long ago, as Phin nodded in agreement. "You gonna buy us a drink?"
"Rock, two Cokes for the boys here, huh?"
Both men laughed as the bottled sodas were placed on the counter and Jared glared across at Jeff. "Thanks a lot."
"You want me to add underage drinking to your long list of shit you shouldn't have done?" Rock asked, his hands spread out on the counter in front of him as he leaned across it and got in Jared's space.
"Oh, fuck you both," Jared muttered, grabbing the soda and scraping his stool back to stand. Jeff caught his arm as he started to leave and he scowled, yanked it free. "What?"
"You're only 16, Jared. We're just trying to help you not fuck your entire life."
"Thanks, man," Jared said, his tone overly sarcastic. "Means a lot to me."
"Where're you going now?"
"To get some air and drink my Coke in peace. Is that okay with you?"
Phin could see that Jeff was tired of arguing with the kid, and he just shrugged and let him go. But as he did, he looked over at Phin with a hopeful smile. "You mind?" he started to ask, and Phin got up, picked up his soda too.
"Sure, no problem." He was used to keeping an eye on the kid, or at least trying to. Since they'd met he'd had Jared down as this angry kid who just wanted to cause trouble for the sake of it, but now he knew a little better. Jared had good reasons to be as pissed off at the world as he was and Phin didn't blame him for half the stuff he got up to. But sometimes Jeff was right, and he took it too far.
Phin pushed open the door that led to the lot at the side of the bar. There were two rows of motorbikes out here, a few trucks along the edge of the lot. He couldn't see Jared, but he didn't worry too much. The kid was probably cooling off somewhere, sneaking a quick cigarette. Phin lit up one of his own, took a long drag and started to walk between the parked 'bikes. He took a gulp of his Coke and swallowed hard when he heard the engine noise start.
Shit, no. He knew that sound. And now he knew where Jared was. He dropped the bottle at his feet, flicked the cigarette into the dusty earth as he started to run around to the back of the bar. He was too late though. Moments later, his dad's Harley rolled into view and Jared was hunched over it, Rock's too-big helmet pushed down on his head. Phin waved a hand at him, yelled at him to stop, but Jared wasn't stopping for anyone. As he sped past and Phin jumped out of the way just in time, he threw his own soda bottle in the direction of the building. It smashed against the wall and Coke sprayed out, but Jared was already gone.
Oh, fuck, Phin thought. We are so screwed. If he had been aware then of how many times he might think that over the years, he might have re-evaluated his friendship with Jared there and then. But he didn't. He calmly went inside and told his dad and Jeff what Jared was doing. He'd waited at the bar while they both went out on Jeff's own Harley to catch up with the boy. He'd been there when Jared had come back, watched as he was shoved down into one of the chairs near the back of the bar and told to stay right where he was. He hadn't said a word when Jeff and Rock had lectured him there in front of everyone, although he had tried to step in when his dad looked like he was ready to hit something. Phin knew that he wouldn't, that he would never have hurt Jared, because they both knew what he'd been through with his own dad already, but he still got in the way of them and told them to just lay off.
He took Jared home, kept him out of the way. He knew he'd be in trouble later for doing it, but he didn't care. They could drill the message into Jared as much as they wanted, but if he didn't want to hear it then he wouldn't listen.
"I screwed up," Jared said, collapsing on the couch in Jeff's front room.
"Yeah, you did."
"Your dad thought you should've stopped me."
"I tried, asshole. You nearly ran me over while I was trying."
"Huh. Sorry 'bout that."
"Right. Remember that next time you get me in shit."
"You'll be okay. He's not really pissed at you, just at me."
When Phin turned up at Jared's the next day with a fat lip, neither of them really mentioned it.
