The song refers to the practice of enslaving workers in the mine (mostly recent immigrants from Poland and Ireland) in coal-digging industry, when "the Company" will sign a contract with the person, and then issue them their local "currency" that could only be redeemed at the Company store (the only supply store in town).. And St. Peter reference is because both Poles and Irish were the dispised "papists", i.e. Roman Catholics...
