Would it help to show your waiter or the person at the counter the kanji for vegetarian so they can guide you in the right direction?

I realize in parts of Japan fish counts as vegetarian, but it's at least a start.

Related note - the kanji for vegetarian is only just a stroke's difference from the symbol for vegetarian in Mandarin Chinese. I am amused.
