most of the world hates my friendly neighborhood grocery store, and I'm still not entirely sure why. (Yes, I'm aware of the bias where people only post reviews on places like yelp if they only have extremely positive or negative experiences, but I've heard this opinion expressed by friends in person too

Even if they have, they can probably be excused for expecting most places in the US to be less crowded than anything in Manhattan.

And the only time I have complaints about grocery staff are... let's see, the time the cashier stopped scanning to chit-chat with the bag boy (who also stopped bagging) and turned into a sourpuss when my mom said "excuse me!", and the time the bag boy put my bread at the bottom of the bag of heavy things. Sullen? Whatever.
In response to your eta: the demographic that uses yelp, of course. I'm looking at the Miami reviews and they're all the hipster, indie places that no one goes to save... hipsters and occasionally New Yorkers who think they're authentic Miami experiences. I haven't even heard of most of these places and I was born and raised in this city.
