I went to regular private day camp for two summers and hated it because they made me swim. I enjoyed the crafts and photography and even archery, but the swimming was just miserable and overshadowed any positive qualities.
I went to day "camp" (we called it a summer program) for gifted kids for two summers and loved it because we could choose classes in art, drama, magic, computers. etc. I ended up working for that program, although at different campuses, for a total of four summers. One as junior staff member, and three as magic teacher.
I never went to day camp -- summers we often went on extended camping trips, and when home we just played. I think parent(s) were often home, but it was before this age of constant supervision
