In many arid regions, rocks slowly aquire a dark coating of unknown origin. This so-called "desert varnish" is rich in iron oxides and mangese oxide. No one knows exactly how the coatings develop, although the presence of the metal oxides suggests some biological process contributes to their formation.

Alaska is so gorgeous. Matt & Brendyn & Joe and I went down to Alyeska- and driving down the penninsula as the sun was rising was one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen. amber lit mountains with the mist comming from down the fjords and ice floating in the cold inlet. michelle is a sparrow, and is reading on wikipidia about herself. there is so much to learn! did you know that Some sparrows can live like pigeons in cities eating small quantities of just about anything.
