So why is it that some people call Jean-Paul Sartre the father of existentialism, and others say his book "Nausea" is a bunch of existentialist crap? Why is that concept so scoffed, exactly? 'Cause the more I've looked into it (so far), the more intrigued (and horrified) I'm becoming. Is existentialism just some fad that's drifted out of style, or ( Read more... )

he is a great guy. the analytical philosophy types think all continental philosophy is crap-- so if you are told that existentialism is crap, it's because of that. they've got sticks up their asses though, so don't listen to them. continental philosophy is beautiful. (the analytical philosophers think it's a waste of time because it doesn't involve logic so much).

Well, that's encouraging, and I will continue to investigate it (but with a critical mind, of course), at the same time I am skeptical of it because of the whole lacking logic bit, I mean I told myself "Well who needs logic all the time anyways?" and I'd have to USE logic to come up with an answer, so...logic rears its nitpickingly ugly head again. Oh, but who am I kidding, gotta love analytical philosophy too, just not all by itself. That's where the problems seem to come in.
