My 2 bits would be to keep the function of this bridge, but use it as a jumping off point. I think you could do some really nice decorative arch type detail within the open spaces on the railings.
My instinct would be to say go with a simple bridge, structurally, then do the railings up like, um, what are those railings in front of the altars in cathedrals?
Or if you wanted open railings, you could simply do an outline of an arch - sort of like mimicking the outline of a stained glass window in eash section....
A long time ago, I was thinking of making an arch way type entrance to the camp, with a kitty hawk (rampant) on each side and a Boreas supported over the top by the two kitty hawks. It's not horribly period by any stretch, but would look really cool and would be hard to miss. If the bridge had some taller posts on the side away from camp, these kitty hawks could be cut out of ply wood (one sheet each) and then bolted to those upright posts every war. They'd have to live in the storage shed for the rest of the year.
Just my 2 pennies. It's your project, so do what you think is best. (I'll help, but you are in charge).
I don’t think I want to incorporate the gate in with it, mostly because the coopers and land staff were clear that the bridge gave us no claim to that land. So in years where we were not right in front of the bridge the gate would look out of place.
thats sort of the plan I want to make the arch high enough that I have blank space to play with but no so high that I get beat to death with complaints. people get lazy at war.

You see function ... I see a blank canvas! :-)

I am an ass pain I know.
If it must be wood, I have not got a plan for it in my head yet. It will be like porn, I'll know it when I see it.
