This makes me think about sampling (of course), especially sampling people talking. Get someone to talk into a mic for 45 minutes and when you go back through, you'll have swaths of chatter that seemed interesting at the time but contain nothing useful whatsoever. Some little detail you didn't even catch the first time around, an intake of breath before a laugh, or an aside to someone who knocked on the door, presents itself as the most amazing and real moment of the whole file... it's weird, but it also makes sense....
