Title : Dubito (to doubt, to waver)
Author: ari_g
Disclaimer: nope Smallville ain't mine
Summary: Sequel to
Saevio, and
Sperare. It took him a while, to stop feeling betrayed long enough to see her side of things, but he did.
“Jimmy still hasn’t woken up” Oliver looks up from his computer at the tall alien.
“So hasn’t Chloe” Anger eats him up from inside out. Anger at Clark for not being able to do what had to be done. Anger at Davis for just being. Anger at Chloe for being so noble. Anger at Jimmy for being so weak, so stupid. And above all anger at him for not seeing it coming. For being so childish in waiting to punish Chloe for leaving him and the league that he would put a civilian on a mission. A civilian that killed the only person who could see under all the masks he wears and accept him.
“You think Davis is right? You think that Chloe would wake up?”
No he doesn’t really believe that she would wake up, but he wants to. “I’m having Dr. Emil look at her again. If there is someone who could cheat death, that would be Chloe Sullivan”
“I can’t believe Jimmy would actually hurt her”
“Well, you better believe it because it happened” He had a 35 pages file of forensic data that proved it.
“I've always tried to forget I was an alien or a creature. I've always tried to pretend I was human. I was raised to believe it was my Kryptonian part that was dangerous, but I was wrong. It's my human side. It.. It's the side that gets attached, the side that makes decisions based on emotions. That's my enemy.”
“And Jimmy proved that to you?” a snort “What a bunch of bullshit” he wants to laugh at the look on his face. “You thought humanity was fundamentally good. That’s what you always needed to believe that to think it worth saving, but human nature isn’t good or evil. It’s both. But you never wanted to see it, and Chloe knew that. She was always two or three steps ahead of everyone else”
“I don’t know what you mean”
“Why do you think Chloe stopped you from sending Davis to the Phantom Zone?”
“Chloe wanted to save Davis, you wanted to kill him”
He can’t help but laugh “But she did kill him, remember? She just wouldn’t let you condemn a human to a living hell just to keep your hands clean. You would have never forgiven yourself that.” Oliver can see that he doesn’t get it.”Trust me, if there had been a way to kill Bloome, she would have taken it. She would have given him peace. Do you really think that all those deaths don’t eat at him?”
“That was the beast. Jimmy had no excuse”
“Except that he is human. No meteor powers, no possession or temporal insanity by the space rocks, just human nature.” The full moon shines over Metropolis and far in the distance the Watchtower raises to the sky. Funny, it used to be just another building, and he can’t seem to miss it. “Chloe moved hell and earth to keep you believing in humanity so you could fulfill your destiny. And you are going to leave Jimmy Olsen turn your back on it.”
“I’m the reason Chloe is dead, Oliver. You were right. I put humanity on a pedestal”
“And now that you realize that it is not perfect, you’re just going to shut off your human emotions, maybe walk out with a dramatic ‘Clark Kent is dead,’ huh?”
“Those emotions are stopping me from being the hero I could be”
“And without them you wouldn’t feel her gone, right?” how the hell did Chloe deal with this? The constant cheers and hand holding to move Clark through life. It’s exhausting. “You can’t be a hero without feeling, Clark. The difference between you and people like Chloe and me is that we see humanity exactly for what it is and we still want to save it whatever the cost. We still want to be a part of it, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s easy to love something perfect, Clark. It takes courage to fight for something so essentially flawed. That’s what makes a hero.”
