Kaiji is a really good show.
Like, really, really good.
It's like Liar Game (but with someone who is actually a mathematical genius writing it) had a lovechild with Saw (except it's still good even after the second arc, which can't be said about all those Saw movies. It's intelligent and intriguing and I teared up during episode fourteen.

But no matter how good this show is the majority of people won't watch because the art style isn't pretty by conventional standards.
This is what upsets me the most. I mean, I get that... I cant watch a majority of "moe" shows because the art style freaks the shit out of me, but the Fukumoto style really grows on you.

At first when I saw the art style I instantly thought it was like "Woah, I haven't seen art like this since Meitantei Conan!" and at first I thought the show must have been older than it seems. But in truth, I'm one of those people who really really likes it when the era that an anime/manga was created in is heavily reflected in it's art style; Kaiji is no different. So it made me really depressed when my sister saw me watching it and then made fun of the character designs. It's different, okay!
Also, I totally get what you mean by Kaiji being moe, now. At last I've seen the light!
