Well, this isn't exactly helpful now that its starting to get colder here, but I live, literally, behind the shopping center where my blockbuster, walmart, and grocery store are. In the spring, i'm going to try to walk over there instead of driving if I just want a movie or something, or I'm going to invest in a new bicycle (mine dieeeed a horrible rust-induced death) and ride instead. We have a 24-hr exercise room at our complex too, so Sarah and I are going to try to make use of that some this winter, they have treadmills and stuff. I spend a lot of time on my computer (suprise suprise), so the big thing is going to be getting me off it and out doing other things.
One of the best... well, actually I think it was the best... eating strategies that I ever adopted was the Zone plan. It emphasizes balance and choosing low glycemic index carbs instead of the higher index carbs. There's a good amount of fruit, macadamia nuts, olives, cheese, etc. I was never hungry and something about what I was eating, took care of my sweet tooth. I lost my cravings for ice cream and such. It requires you to eat a small amount of fat (olive oil, a few nuts, etc) at each meal and to eat 2 snacks a day. It's almost too much food. But I dropped 50 lbs using that strategy and I wasn't even a strict follower; I drink Dr. Pepper no matter what else happens. And I indulged once in a while. The only con to adopting that strategy is that it takes a good bit of time to plan and prepare what you're going to eat, at least until you get used to it. I find it very difficult to do alone. The time it worked, there were two of us working out food plans. There is a free forum, website, and the book(s) can probably be found at Half
