Oh my goodness have you ever seen Clue, the play/movie? There is this conversation about Rudyard Kipling that is hilarious. That's all I can think of when I hear that name.
But there really isn't so much selectivity. I can't walk in and be like, I want such-and-such a book. It's like an Anne & Hope. Or a dollar store. You just sort of get whatever happens to be there... There was an entire two bookcases of Agatha Kristie (???Why Agatha Kristie??), and like a few scattered copies of English books of other titles. Most distorted/random selection I have ever seen.
Does it surprise you that I own the movie Clue? :)
Kipling's all about adventures in India. In fact I've got this old Chuck Jones (director) cartoon version of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (one of the Jungle Book stories) narrated by Orson Welles. It's awesome.
Glad you were able to find books in English! I always pack about 6-8 books for a week's vacation. I don't expect to get through all of them, but I don't know what I'll be in the mood to read next. Nonono, one must always pack Enough Books.
And Kafka is one of my all time faves--good to hear you'll be reading him! Try Amerika if they have it--quite the romp.
Heh I "have access to Amazon" in the sense that I can technically order things to the place I'm staying. In practice though, they don't seem to actually appear. The USB stick I ordered (having forgotten mine in the U.S.) when I got here hasn't arrived yet--and from what Asha Kiran (friend from work) said, probably won't until long after I'm gone...
But it should be much better when I get to Bangalore, which is nearby but a far, far more modern/international city.
Hope you've found inspiration for your book writing tomorrow. I send you inspiration from India.
(Oooh I'm editing lots of technical papers, btw. I edited one, and now people keep asking. It's fun... Though I now know way, way more than I ever wanted to know about shoulder impurities and chiral centers)
LOL my cousin is e-Ink's CEO, so my family is all excited about the kindle. When it process was in development, his kids made flashing eInk ornaments to hang from the Christmas Tree. I don't have the money right now, but you are right, when it comes down in price or when I have the money, I really should get one.
Doh! Your cousin is the CEO of e-Ink? Get get that slacker to get you a Kindle for R&D purposes! Better yet, get one for me! No conflict of interest this way. =)
With all the free books out there, its not horrible price, but yeah, I'm waiting too. Two hundred bucks is about the price point where I'd buy. So I think I'm in for > year's wait.

Kindle is Amazon's e-Ink portable reader. $350 bucks, but ideal for travel. And it really is like reading from a book. No eye strain at all.
