In this fic Spock doesn’t embark with Pike, but stay as a professor in the academy for a while, and Jim like in Tos was auxiliary professor since his final year and professor after. Before his service in the USS Farragut.

Summary: Academy and early career era fic, Lt. Spock gets a mysterious Valentine every year and every year, he has no idea who send it. Who could be the one sending Spock Valentine's for over a decade?

One.

Spock was in his final year when the first card came. He was used to receive some missives from other classmates, generally pranks about his non-existent feelings and bickering. However, he got some real “Valentine’s” as was called on Earth. He had always thought this holiday was one of the most illogical Earth celebrations, not only because the history behind it, but especially because the mythology surrounding it. Apparently it had to do with little earth boys with wings and arrows.

He gathered all the cards he’d gotten and was putting them in a paper recycler, one by one. At least this holiday was almost done. He couldn't help but cast his eyes over the artwork of some of them. One card stood out among all the rest. Drawn on the front was a Vulcan heart-accurate at that. He decides to open it.

Inside the card there were only two numbers written. 1 and 0. Finally, after 23 seconds he understood it was a binary code that was used as a language for computer programming in the 20th century here in Terra. Spock decided to decipher the text and was greatly surprised to see it was a fragment of a pre-Surak poem, in fact one of his favorites. It had to do with the longing for a lover who is out of reach.

Spock thought it was interesting so, he kept that one. He waited passively to see if the sender would reveal him or herself, but nothing of the sort happened. Spock forgot the incident eventually, but had stored the card inside one book of his.

Two.

Spock decided to teach Vulcan and computer-related studies for a period in Academy. He’d rejected the offer of Captain Pike for the position of Science officer aboard the Enterprise because, he thought he needed more time to understand human beings and Terra culture- He wanted more experience in a secure environment. The Academy was just the place.

Within his post, he was acquainted with several professors, the most interesting one, being a young man named James T. Kirk. Kirk was still a last year cadet, but he had the same schedule Spock had last year- Both taking the courses of four years in 3. The other man was also a complimented auxiliary professor in the second year course: Introduction to Interstellar Law. The two talked sometimes-when they would happen upon each other in the professor’s cafeteria or the library.

Valentine’s Day arrived. Like every year he gathered the cards he received, only stopping when he noticed a hand-made one from the secret admirer. The front of the Valentine had a green heart drawn onto it and inside was another Vulcan poem. This time it was written in an old Andorian warrior code. He knew it was from the same individual that has sent him the prior, because the poem was of the same author, this time about the love that is separated by war.
Like the year before no one individual took credit for the card, and he unconsciously put it in the same book as the first one.

Three.

That year came and went very quickly Spock and Kirk were in friendly terms- he may had being the first friend Spock had ever really had. They talked often about literature, especially 20th century Earth, sometimes about philosophy and so on.

There was a point when Spock became concerned for James’s career a lapse of time, because of his cheating in the Kobayashi Maru test. Spock was grateful he had not accepted to write that particular program. It was intriguing that in the end James was commended for original thinking.

When mid-February came around, he arrived to his office at the Academy only to see a card awaiting him on his desk. This time the card lay atop of a box that contained exotic fruits. The note was written in Vulcan, impeccably written and spell. It said, "I will gain your confidence in me."

Four, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth.

James accepted a post as a Tactical officer on the U.S.S. Farragut. As the pair shared their good-byes, Kirk surprised him by turning round and saying, “We will meet again as Captain and First, you’ll see my friend.”

Soon after that, the post for science officer re-opened on the U.S.S. Enterprise, and Spock decided to take the opportunity.

Time passed by but, he and James exchanged mail in the Federation net. It was a little old style, because these days it was customary to use a vid-comm or at least an audio one, but it was suitable. This exchange has certain charm in it is own right. They got to exchange experiences, discoveries during their missions, chess games, things of that nature.

Every Saint Valentine’ Day for the past few years he got another letter from his secret admirer. Spock became positive that they were all from the same person. Who else would go to the lengths to know his location, position? All the cards contained some kind of poetry - either from Earth or Vulcan. They were always in code or an alien language. There was never any name on the cards. Spock even consider confronting his friend about this. But, he never did it.

Thirteenth.

Pike was ascended to admiral and Number One as Captain of the Georgetown. Spock climbed the ranks to Lt. Commander in the First Officer post, he also asked to maintain his post as Science Officer. No one really knew who would become the new Captain of the Enterprise.

* * *

The day eventually came, and with their dress uniforms on, The Med officer Boyce the main engineer Lt. Commander Scott and he were prepared to receive the new Captain.

Spock never expected to see James, more mature now in his green dress uniforms - the material seemed to gave away a certain hue in his eyes.

James presented the officer at his side as Gary Mitchell, the new helmsman and himself as the Captain James Tiberius Kirk. Jim was the youngest Captain in the history of Starfleet at age thirty-one.

He take the hands of the officer except his, and attempted a very unsuccessful Vulcan hand’s salute.

“Long live and prosper Mr. Spock.” Kirk said, a big smile and a mischievous look in his seemingly green eyes.

Spock answered simply, “I am here to serve, Captain.”

* * *

While waiting for their assignment to start their five year mission, James familiarized himself with the ship and crew. They play chess at the rec rooms on a daily basis after their meal in the officer’s mess. Spock was not certain of himself anymore. He had learned a lot under the guide of Captain Pike and Number One. He was much more familiarized with a human crew and with deep space missions, but no training could help or make him understand the attraction he felt towards James Kirk. His eyes always ended up in his features and he began to notice himself anticipating his entrance into a room before it actually happened.

He was finding it difficult to retain his control every time Lt. Mitchell entered the personal space of his Captain. Spock was trying hard not to lose his cool and break the man's neck. He meditated more hours than usual, trying to hold on his focus.

* * *

Their first mission went terribly wrong. It'd fallen on Valentine's Day, of all days.
Lt. Mitchell as well as another member of their crew, Dr. Dehner were unwillingly turned into Gods and had tried to destroy both the Enterprise and the Captain.

Spock knew the entire situation affected the Captain in a deep way. Mitchell was a friend who'd turned into a monster and no one could've done anything to save him.

* * *

Spock did not receive a letter from the secret admirer; but, the day was not ended yet. Spock felt himself anticipating a letter, a note. Was it foolish to feel faith in such a thing, let alone a silly Earth custom?

Spock tried to meditate, but it was no use. Finally he left his quarter and found himself outside of his Captain ones, his friend, his intended, his secret admirer? He knocked.

He was received by Jim, who had a letter in his hand. With a warm smile he let Spock enter.

Jim was trying to write the last letter to Spock for Valentine day, not without trouble
“To Spock:

…You know, i just destroyed up like 20 pages of things i want to tell you. But, i think i suck at letters, specially the one where I let you know who send you Valentines for a decade, now.

The thing is, i don't know how to live without you anymore!
Because i can't sleep or stay near you so prepare yourself because here i go!

(or later because someone is on the door now, you see perfect *sigh*)

Jim .”
