For the SL players

Dec 15, 2005 10:05

If you don't play SL, this is not going to make sense, so I will put it behind a cut. Am going to leave it public so any SL-playing friend can point others to it.

Seems GinkoTec (or Ginko Technologies, they use both semi-interchangeably) has set up a banking system ingame on SL called Ginko Financial. Apparently, they decided to go the way of scumware / spyware, their terminals scanning the area for population density, names and character keys (kinda a digital DNA code). They got caught the other day and last night one of the land barons removed their terminals from The Forest and all of dreamland for violating privacy codes.

Ginko's response? You're picking on us! We did nothing wrong! it has a notecard telling folks what it does (activated AFTER the discovery)! You're just bashing Ginko! We tell land owners what it does, when we remember to do! Anshe is evil!!!! (I agree, but this time I side with her). Their programmer is unrepentent about it being there and patently insulting (as were most GinkoTec posters) to those that do not want scanners on their lands.

Real impressive for a banking operation, even virtual, eh? But hardly surprising. Whyfor?

These clowns USED to be on SPR...using the exact same names of GinkoTec and Ginko Technologies...hell, there are still a few rooms and objects with those names in the DB. So last night I did some looking back over wizlogs and item descs, and memories.

  • First, one of their characters (he owns some of the remaining rooms) was Hinoserm. This joker tried to hack the credit system on SPR and lost his mucker bit, then was reprimanded by another wiz for abusing MPI, its right in the wizlog....and he's coincidentally the lead programmer for the scanning in the terminals! Hrm...
  • On SPR, Fox85 and another GT member (think it was Dabnormalone) copied code belonging to me and to Syvel off SPR onto their muck (GinkoMUCK, how original). We asked them to remove it after logging in and verifying. Their response, delete our characters and block guests from listing code. We finally had to threaten to contact their ISP over IntProp rights violations before they pulled it (and we had a friend that was there verify for us).
  • At one point or others, almost all their group was either spacebanned or under various SPR sanctions (mucker bits removed, warned for abusing MPI, etc) so it wasn't just me that had a problem with them.

Now they are on Second Life, running an bank. An ingame bank, for christ sakes...hackers, scripting abusers and IntProp thieves...and now ingame spyware coders. Haven't changed one goddamn bit...just took their behavior to another game and cloak it in being 'official'...though its clear from their ingame responses, they have not learned public relations. My word of advice to ALL SL GAMERS - AVOID GINKOTEC LIKE THE PLAGUE! TAKE YOUR MONEY OUT NOW AND IF THEY HAVE TERMINALS ON YOUR LAND, REMOVE THEM!"

scammers, ginkotec, second life
