I can't say that has happened to me, but I can totally imagine how that situation would arise.

I think it has something to do with whether or not you decide to date someone you already know or not. I would want that, too, but they've got to be my best friends (as far as I've dated...that part of my life is kind of at a stand-still at this point). Then afterwards I will wait as long as it takes to be their friend again. But the waiting part sucks and just cutting them out would be a lot easier, I agree.
