Trillian's okay, but it costs money (if you want to be legit and want all the benefits), is bulky, and has a lot of annoying things like not letting you view HTML in buddy profiles.
Gaim, on the other hand, is open source, just as prettyable as Trillian, and you can add your own features if you feel like it. (I do prefer how Trillian handles logging, however)
I'll add to the consensus: I use [non-AIM program]. You should use [non-AIM program]!
I use trillian mostly because it's a pretty decent alternative to AIM. I couldn't handle the AIM suggestions to update at seemingly random intervals, the flash ads that'd blare music when my mouse passed over them (I think it managed to pull that off with a fullscreen program running too), and also annoying were the "Sign up for AOL now!" links that'd be placed in 3-5 places after I finally caved to the install entreats.
I think it "helps" that I use AIM at work, to remind me why I don't use it at home =D
