If, for instance, a certain Mary Smith marries Harry Jones, but decides to keep her surname - what does that make her? Mrs Smith?.. Ms Smith?..

She would have a choice. Many states let you take your maiden name as your middle name - Mary Smith Jones or she can hyphenate Mary Smith-Jones or she can be Mrs. or Ms. Smith. Any are proper and widely used.
