New models for journalism

Aug 26, 2009 11:44

A buddy of mine is interested in starting up her own website covering news. Most likely statehouse reporting. Anyone have any favorite websites they turn to for news/gossip/what have you? We're looking for models to see what can be improved upon, or what we can steal.

Thanks in advance!

I like Jezebel.com, which is part of the gawker network. The format of the site is obnoxiously busy, and the comment system is not only annoying but can be deadly to slow connections. But I love the features: Snap Judgment is just a photo an editor thought was fun or interesting, Dirt Bag is a collection of gossipy news with each item in 3 sentences or less, Leftovers covers a bunch of interesting or bizarre news items that got less media attention than they deserved. They also have video clips of entertaining things you may have missed on TV and a bunch of other stuff.

Yeah, Jezebel is awesome. Wired is great too. Not like the old days, but great.

Yikes. I love Wonkette (liberal D.C. gossip blog, used to be part of Gawker). It is 110 percent snark and it brings the lols daily. It's a little much for some people, but I enjoy it.
