today's question

what is your ideal life? when you squint your eyes and see the world that you would have most perfectly, the place you hope to end up some day, what does it look like? what are you doing? where are you living? who are you with? how does it work? i want details, big or small; i want to know what you see. do you think you'll get there?

it involves:

1. having a big, sweet dog.

2. a country house and a city apartment, staying in whichever i feel like at the moment

3. a person to cuddle with, but not necessarily who lives with me

4. lots of time to be lazy and read all day.

5. a big theatre and art-making space at my and my friends' disposal

6. getting to travel and direct in different cities a couple times a year

7. lots of animals in general

being close to family and friends. like within two miles.

but also having my own space that is a respite and a quiet place when i need it.

a big dog. my cats.

ocean nearby.

city with country in easy reach.

a big, chameleon-like space where music, art, film, craft, etc. can be made.

a space for experimenting with all kinds of food craft - fermentation, homebrewing, cheesemaking, etc.

the time and space to learn about anything i chose.

being surrounded by amazing people.

a sports room.

a lack of obligation. a sense of real and full control over my life (would probably be scarier than i am imagining).

I want to be married to hotpantsgalore. I think we will be raising a child - while that was never-ever part of my vision for my life, it is definitely part of her vision, so I've been slowly adapting to the idea.

We will have a dog, hopefully a Schnauzer.

I imagine will be living in San Francisco again. Although my mad skillz with the crystal ball are, uh, not so skillful, really, so who knows? Maybe we will still be living in NYC, or we will move to Austin, or Edinburgh, or Philadelphia.

I want to be in a job that has more responsibility than my current position - probably still in environmental remediation consulting. I want hotpantsgalore to be in a satisfying career. I want us to be financially comfortable, defined as: able to sustain our current lifestyle, save for college & retirement, & travel a little bit.

I want to have found & become deeply involved in a good church.
And a good swim or triathlon team.

2 dogs and a cat. A big house with a huge porch. Neighbors who are friends. All my dearest college friends in walking distance. An awesome kitchen. Doing social-sexual psych research somewhere where I make good money, being good enough in my field to be invited to give talks. WIth students maybe. Erik will be doing whatever makes him happy, maybe pursuing hobbies, maybe working, maybe also researching, probably something cognitive. There'll be two kids, a fabulous and extrodinarily well stocked (ingredients and toys) kitchen, a comfortable level of somewhat upper middle class income. Travel, Erik loves to and I long to.
Something like that anyway =)
