Do girls exist on the internet?

Since a number of the people on my friends list are female, I just had to share this article with all of you. Much thanks to my friend Ken for pointing it out to me.

heh, most girls in games that would benefit from Ventrilo or TS don't want to get on unless they know the other people on the server because of the crap they get from most other gamers. i've had a few 'holy shit, that's a girl!' moments when i've joined such servers. this of course doesn't even count the number of pre/post op trans people in games.

i've also been given flack for being -old- in games. apparently once you hit 30 you got to do boring crap that these little obnoxious kids parents do or something.

Hee! This was great.

I can remember getting those kinds of responses on IRC in the early 90s, and earlier on other networks. I think the problem this lady experiences is not the internet itself, but WoW and the gaming culture, which is probably kind of guycentric. Of course, I don't play these games so I don't know, but G does, and he says it's murder to admit you're a girl on any game he plays.

i like to admit it after i've totally wiped the floor with someone, but that's the competitive streak in me.

Hee! One of my favourite things to do when Steve and I were first together and I was just getting to know his gaming friends in Massachusetts was, when they were all together for a board game or something, to say sweetly from the kitchen in my little Southern voice, "Hey, can I plaaay?" And hearing them all go indulgently, "Oh, c'mon, Steve; let your girlfriend play." Heh, heh, heh.
