i don't understand how this works. when i click to answer, it creates a new post?

Yes. The point is that you are having a hard time with your own journal, so it makes you post your own answer so people can respond.

then it all made sense.

Which is one of the reasons why we need to overhaul the relationship-name system entirely. My relationship to my brother's wife is different than my relationship to my (hypothetical) wife's (hypothetical) sister. Although the current system has the advantage that I am the brother-in-law of my brother-in-law.

The biggest offender is of course the "cousin-X-removed" system, which implies a symmetry in my relationship with my cousin's children (they are my first cousins once removed, and I am theirs) that is clearly not present, since they are 2 and 4 respectively.
