Oh, thanks, fellow starry-eyed idiots, for putting this article in my face. It is, from what I've seen, entirely valid. And that makes me sad, except not, because I had already given up years ago.

Administration FTW?

Pfft, tl;dr. I can summarize that whole ridiculous rant in a few pithy words: "I didn't get tenure, so I'm going to throw a tantrum in literary form. Therefore, throwing tantrums is the only useful application of a humanities PhD."

WHARRGARBL.

Academia is competitive, as is any other employment sector. This guy needs to grow up and deal with it, not whine about the people who got the plum jobs. As for you, keep doing what you're doing. There are far more things to do with a PhD in a humanities discipline than teach undergraduate and graduate courses: you can devote your career to writing, run a publication or academic journal, work for a foundation or think tank, get a government fellowship to do research, take a position with a professional organization, etc.

Hell I have trouble getting work and I have one of those so-called "professional degrees". (MA in Library and Information Science). I can't even get a simple secretarial position. They look at a resume and see that you are more educated than the hiring manager, they then fear you'll "be bored", "leave upon finding a better position", and in the end just don't want to even expend the energy interviewing you let alone hiring and training you.

*twitches nose*

my graduate degree (and i know it's not in humanities) actually hindered my chances at getting a job because everyone thought they'd have to pay me more. turns out they didn't and i got a shitty paying job for two years and lived off of my credit cards. woo hoo!
