"Ban Me!" & "Unjoin Me!" requests

Jun 06, 2011 12:04

Is anyone else getting requests from random lj accounts asking you to ban them from your community, or remove them because - for some curious reason - they joined without knowing it?

It is against lj's rules to let other people use your livejournal account, right?  These are all "paid plus" accounts that are contacting me complaining that "someone ( Read more... )

That has never happened to me on my communities. Could they be trolls?

Admittedly LJ has a lot of security issues and hacking into someone's account can happen. But in most cases, people let their friends log into their accounts.

And yes, you can ban people from your community or even posting on your journal. Especially if they are harrassing you.

If you are constantly hounded by these ban me and unjoin me comments, I would report them. But you are right, they can just unjoin themselves rather than make more work for you D:. Very annoying.

The last person actually replied to my 'copy&pasted' response, so I'd like to go ahead and ban her. Thanks for letting me know it's possible. I'll try that for her (whether she was telling the truth or not).

Usually when I get one I explain how they can do it themselves and that if don't want people joining my community in their name, they shouldn't let those people use their accounts. I've only gotten it five times so far, but it was all within the last two months. That's enough for me to have made up a response to paste to people when they contact me with the request.

I just want to know what there is to gain from letting a bunch of people use your account. What are they hiding? It's not just a friend or two, or they'd be able to tell those few friends to stop joining communities. It has to be a bunch of people they don't know personally for them to contact community owners instead. I'm so curious it hurts. ^^;

It is weird they copied and pasted your comment. It seems more like a troll than an actually request.

I pm-ed you the name of the person who sent me the same message of asking me to ban them. Although when I looked at their journal they are still watching manga_luv, despite their message on their journal.

Strangely this person only applied to join the community a week ago and now already wants to be banned? Very confusing indeed!

1) That's messed up! Whoever these people are, they're pretty idiotic.

2) I haven't had this problem, but then again, I don't have even a tenth of your membership volume. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, though. Sorry I can't be of more help!

It might be new, or it could just be my bad luck. If you get one, make sure to keep it. If we both get contacted by the same person, then that's the sort of thing I like to keep track of. Trolls or repeat offenders, either way.

I was really hoping to find out this was a new trend, so I could ask 'when did this start and why'. If it's just me, then I'll keep pasting my canned response and learn to ignore it. ^^;

I'm glad you made a post about it in case it does happen to me, though.

When you mentioned it was plus accounts I felt worried because that's what I have, and since LJ had that virus issue (or whatever) a few weeks back, I thought there might be some sort of nefarious connection between the two, like hacking or something.

Whatever's going on, it's unusual. I don't know exactly how many of these messages you've received, but even more than one seems odd. I simply can't believe it's just you, and I'd bet there are some other community maintainers scratching their heads like you are.

I really don't think it's hacks. I know the one with the warning on the profile was letting people use it intentionally - why else write "don't join groups or let this account join" on the profile description. ^^; The last one I got claimed she was trying to quit yaoi and was afraid she'd give in to temptation and join again if I didn't ban her.

I haven't had anyone claim their account had been hacked yet. I'll watch for it, though. That's the best excuse you can give and not look suspicious.

I've gotten 5 of them so far. The last one was in my email account because she'd sent her limit of lj messages already. o.O I didn't know there *was* a limit to the number of messages you can send, so that's kinda scary to think about.

Thanks. ^^ If you do get one, PM me with the name. I really do want to see if it's the same people doing this in the yaoi communities in particular, or just a lj-wide trend.

I know one particular lj account that's being used by more than one person. It's a manga-sharing lj account that used to be open, but her download links kept getting reported so she made it so only her friends can see it, but she exceeded her friend limit, thus she lets people log in to that account to get access to some yaoi stuff.

That's what it sounds like. And that I can *completely* understand doing. I only made my lj community because I hit my limit on 'friends'. But it really wasn't hard to make a community, it's free and easy to join and maintain. I'm still a lj newb and I managed to do it. ^^;
