rather than seeing this as "messing it up", why not describe it as growth? Remember, adaptation was the feature upon which Piaget believed intelligence rested. Adaption is growth, and it requires questioning and "messing up" one's view of the world. It is how we grow, and eventually learn to see self. I say this because I believe that our searching for answers must eventually turn inward to the depths of self. Maturity lays there, somewhere- in a place where truly appreciate who we are, where we came from, and where we are going. I see this as balance through imbalance (to connect to your post's topic).
